This whole thread is absolutely inspiring! Thank you, all, and especially Memory Girl. :)
After the panic of being left with 71p (where I went into angry lioness mode and stormed around dong the protectnig my cubs bit).................. well I kinda lost track for a long time. I spent ages not wanting to leave the house, planning how to trim our budget even more, drawing my horns in .......................... and crying ............... a lot!!!

But slowly - every tin in my storecupboard was celebrated as a success, every cleaned kitchen was cheered, every free day playing with the baby in the park was an Olympic medal, every loaf of homemade bread was a demonstration of my love for my boys.

Then one day I simply decided that I didn't want to be forced to live a small insignificant life by the bank who took my business - and things started to change - at first quite slowly, and then sometimes quite rapidly.

I think that goes on the back cover of your book?

    Memorygirl,

if I were to identify three main problems PhD students (and researchers) have to grapple with these would be:

    Outlining (usually people have in mind a broad interest and this has to be translated into researcheable problems);
Chunking (once specified the problem usually requires a complex argument. As Einstein said "Any intelligent idiot can make things complex but it needs genious to make them simple. Chunking is what helps make complex things simple.)
Pacing (they ran fast during the first year because they are fresh, enthusiastic and there is structure provided by training programmes; then get lost during the seocng year - there is no outsied structure and the inherent structure of the thesis is not always clear; and than start running again in year three because the finish line is near. The whole process will be considerably less painful if they pace themselves.)

It seems to me that mind maps can help with all three.

Miggy - that sent shivers down my spine. I wasn't even thinking that when I wrote it -although looking at it now I may have to sort out the typo's.

Although my "new to me" laptop should arrive this week and it at least has space bar that works.:T

    Thanks Firewalker

That makes things even more "simple" for me:T

Its beginning to look like their is a need in this niche for a specialised course - thinking a combination of ................

Online Masterclasses in Mind Mapping, Memory, Speed Reading and Study Skills (or a in person seminar)
Teleclasses throughout the second year especially on "expand, chunk, define, refine, script and deliver"
    Online "prompt-coaching" by email
Perhaps a PDF downloadable "workshop manual"
Perhaps even a speicalised PHD forum for discussion on a site

Thinking along the technology route as of all the groups this is the one who are very likely technologically savvy - although my heart is in "live delivery" I realise its not always going to be possible - or affordable for students either.

Off to research what books are avaiable to assist PHD Students - although the last time I did that for secondary school students I ended up writing the definitive book instead (Just call me Victor Kyam):rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    Thanks Firewalker -always an inspiration:T

    Ok - almost forgot.

    TODAY I AM WEARING

    Jeans
    Black wrap cardigan
    Wedge sandals
    Chunky necklace

Denim Jacket and Leather bag for going out.

Pretty casual look - but will be able to swap the heels for flats to do some DIY later.

    GUESS WHAT?????????

DS1 fell asleep on the couch having a cuddle last night (he doesn't usually, but he hadn't had a nap yesterday so was ready to keel over as soon as he stopped). So I popped him into his "big boy bed" ........................................ and he slept right through until 6.20 am this morning when he crept into my bed for a cuddle:T:T

Of course I didn't sleep so well because I was listenning out for him all night:cool:

But seeing as he is in his room playing with his cars right now I think we can mark "Project Baby Room" a success:j

Just need to repair a blind for his room and he is all set........... and I didn't need to spend a penny - it was all from stuff I had just jiggled around a bit.

    Woooooooooohoooooooooooooo!!!
