I was posting on another thread about school lunches when another poster made a comment about there always being a sweet or pudding course (or dessert or whatever you like to call it) for lunch everyday. It got me wondering why schools seem to think that two courses for lunch is normal?
I would just like to know (cos I am nosy and this question would undoubtedly keep me awake at nights) whether I am completely in the minority when i say that I never eat dessert at lunch (or dinner) except when at weddings etc.
comments please - but dont forget to say if YOU

have dessert and whether you think schools should offer this automatically or maybe offer dessert for those who want one for a small additional sum (they could reduce the price of the main course then):)

I always have to have dessert in the evenings and whenever we go out for dinner, my meal doesn't feel complete without it. But chocolate is my only vice so I don't feel too bad!0

c. Never. Unless it's at someones house say we've been invited for Sunday lunch and they've done an apple pie, well it'd be rude not to have a bit! Generally unless it's a special occasion then never for lunch and rarely for dinner either.
With regards to school dinners I think it shouldn't be an option. I'd like to see a piece of fruit given at break time instead which would be a good way of getting them into a healthier eating pattern. How children are expected to concentrate with all that stodge in their tummies after lunch I don't know.0 -
Hi, we only have puds when we have people over or occasionally when we are out, but most main courses when you are out are so large nowadays we don't have room. However, my MIL has 'puddings' of some description with every meal (it might be just a yoghurt sometimes but they have to have something sweet)!LBM 17th April 2007:j

I not only have dessert every time but I've been known to pass on the main course and just have a pud!!
I assume this is primary school? At high school it's usually more canteen style where the kids pay for whatever they have. I guess it's just easier for the schools to have a set meal and set price for younger ones (who maybe would be too young to handle money and pay for individual courses)0 -
Almost always have fruit after a meal or fruit juice ( vitamin c help you absorb more iron form your meal

Always when going out for a meal, very rarely at home. I've always wondered why school dinners seem to think it essential to include a pudding when most people don't eat them as a normal thing.0

Our school do have fruit as a dessert option.. it isn't all cake and custard like in ye olden days!! They also get a helping of fruit at morning break as well so they get lots of food!
in primary they cannot have the dessert until they have eaten a decent amount of dinner so I don't see the issue..
if we go out for dinner I ALWAYS have dessert.. and quite often at home we have dessert of fruit, yohurts, ice cream or cake.. they are fabulous incentive for small children to eat all their dinner up.. or at least most of it.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
well so far it looks us if us 'never at homes' are definately in the minority!
to be fair to mum when i was growing up we also had tea and that was usually what would count as a pudding (treacle tart or sponges and custard or rice pudding). so perhaps it was dessert but the waitress service was appalling!!!! (sorry mum)0 -
We usually have some dessert of some kind, either fruit or yoghurt. Or if I've got a lot of fruit that needs using then I'll make either a pie or crumble, or rice pudding if a lot of milk left over. Somehow the evening isn't complete unless we have a dessertMortgage Free as of 20.9.17Declutter challenge 2023, 2024 🏅 🏅⭐️⭐️
