  • I know they do in Poundstretcher as I used to work there.

Also I got a letter from my credit card company (Halifax) to say that my card would be cancelled at the end of the month (I had never used it) and it had the full credit card number as the "reference"

I went to a local pub last night for a meal and a few drinks and set up a tab for the bill I payed it later with my credit card on their new chip and pin machine, however the first time the transaction did not go through and they had to void it, the payment went through on the second attempt no problem.
I asked for the void slip for my own peace of mind and when going through my pockets this morning I found the void slip and examined it and to my suprise although the portion that they give to the customer has all but the last four digits of the card number blanked out the part that the retailer keeps does not, all the numbers are printed there for all to see along with start date and expiry date ! what is the point of only obscuring the customers part ? is this just to lul us in to a false sence of security?, just remember that the retailer will have a copy of your card details. It may be best to enquire how these reciepts are disposed of.

    Cheers, M.
  • My wife works in a large store in Barrow-in-Furness and tells me that although most of the customer's number is hidden, she has the full details on her shop copy. She says that her shop keeps the copies for 6 months then disposes of them - they bought a shredder to do this. There is no legal obligation to shred them, so in theory they could just dump them in the bin! I asked to see the shop copy of my transaction with chip & pin at KwikSave yesterday - and sure enough it was all there. I don't know how KwikSave dispose of their copies, does anyone know how these big outfits keep our details secure after we leave the shop?

I remember watching a tv programme about this once, this bloke walked down the street in the gutter and picked up about 5 or 6 different reciepts, then took them home and booked:

    1) a holiday for him and his family
    2) Loads of books and things from Amazon
    3) some electrical stuff.

The scary part was that the companies actually delivered to HIS home address and didn't ask any questions at all!!

After that i've made sure that i am really careful with my reciepts, but you still find some places that print the whole card number on the reciepts so be very careful where you drop your litter!!

Some years ago I worked for a company who set a trap for someone who was using a stolen credit card.Electrical items were despatch by company van in their original boxes to the value of approx £800.All items were taken to the persons address and four plain clothes police officers were waiting by the door waiting in the companies uniform ,for the person who ordered to sign for the goods....Gutted on the particular visit no one answered.Unsure if they ever re-attempted delivery.Maybe the person got suspicious and didn't want to open the door

I imagine it depends largely on the policy of the company, or even what the particular store manager decides to do. Where I worked the store copies were kept in the cash drawer until the end of the shift then when the till was emptied they were kept in plastic archive boxes and locked in the cash office for the required period of time, after which someone had the exciting job of shredding them. They were then disposed of in the normal waste.

  • Its just happened to me!! MBNA security contacted me to advise of 4 suspect transactions in the USA. All were high value and were done while I was here in the UK. Someone had obtained my full card number and expiry date over there on a previous visit. The card company are taking the hit. I only got the card to get the free his & her watches. I've cancelled the card now.

" is an HTML code for a quotation mark (").
When the forum got transferred from the old software to the new they got inserted in a few places where quotation marks should have been.

I got a letter from Which? advising me that my monthly direct debit would be changing and they quoted my full credit card details and expiry date in the letter. I phoned them as I wasn’t expecting this increase; however when I questioned the inclusion of my full credit card details they appeared unconcerned - so I cancelled my internet subscription. Who needs Which? when you’ve got MSE.
    I came, I saw, I did a little browsing.
