  • We don't dispose of any credit card slips, I'm not sure on the legality of doing so.(We even keep the till rolls for years just in case.) We put them all with the pile of papers which go to the accountants and remain with that years accounts. We do check them to ensure that the bank have enterred the details correctly onto our banking statement.

Large stores have lots of slips to keep so they are not kept for longer than necessary - for a start there wouldn't be space to store them. I know that where I worked after the slips had been kept for the required amount of time (6 months maybe?) they were shredded before being thrown away.

  • As long as you look after your reciepts you'll be ok. The machine in the shop where I work does this and I always draw their attention to this, explaining it's best to keep it safe but they still shrug and plonk it in their carrier bag to be blown away or dropped when examining their purchase in the cafe!

I do know lots of places that do this, though it does tend to be the cheap and / or old machines that do this.

  • Esso petrol stations do this as well. This worries me. I take great care not to drop or leave any receipts and shred them when I get home.
  • My mum used her newly-issued debit card in Primark for the first and only use. Three days later the bank called to query two charges to the card, totalling £2000: one for an online purchase and one to pay a barclaycard bill. If the funds had been in the account they would have gone through without query. The receipt from primark showed the full card number: once the bank knew they had covered their backs they said no crime had been committed and they wouldn't take any action. My mum contacted the police who are following it up.

thanks for this info!! i've just checked my reciepts and about 5 of them had my card details and my signitsure! I've now ripped them up very small and chucked them out. From now on i will keep a better eye on them!

I noticed last year that Lidl used to print the entire numbers of my debit card on the payment slip. Now there's pin and chip , no numbers
  • Sussex Stationers also print the full number expiry date etc right above your signature. Very convenient. Just shows despite chip and pin you have to be very careful.

Im going to take a marker pen with me so that I can cover the number as soon as I get it in future

Lidl do not accept credit cards, and when using a debit card, no chip and pin, the whole number is printed out.
