Well, being a waste of money depends on circumstances. If you are out and thirsty, and the only drink you can get is bottled water, then it may be money well spent.
On the other hand, I think if you buy it, take it home and drink it in your own home when your tap water is just as good, then it is a waste of money.
Not good value, yes, it is always not good value.0 -

Packets of batter mix which is basically flour and salt in a bag.
Same goes for cake mix - it's pretty much just flour and baking soda.
Same goes for dumpling mix - flour and suet.
It makes me laugh that the instructions on the batter mix says like 'Just add eggs, milk and water' when the recipe for batter is flour, eggs, milk and water. I was thinking about it earlier when my housemate asked me to get him a box of Dumpling mix from the shop, it cost about 50p and makes a meal for 2 people. A bag of flour and 2 boxes of suet would cost about £2 and would probably make about 30 portions.
Another one I found to be disappointing was the Sainsburys Indian Takeaway meal for 2 which comes in the plastic bag with handles, it was pretty much just two regular microwave ready meals in the plastic trays and a naan bread but it cost more than it would have done to buy them as two ready meals IYSWIM.D'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't importantTaste The Rainbow :heartsmil0 -
How about this http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/Shopping/FindProducts.aspx?Query=quavers . An individual pack works out at £22.50 a Kilo  just for a bit of flavoured potatoe! Makes sirloin steak look good value :rotfl:0

Actually the basic/value batter mix - which costs 8p/9p - just adds one egg and water (not milk). It saves me rummaging in the back of the cupboard for the flour and then getting the scales out to weigh it, so since it probably costs me about 4p over the cost of the flour/milk I think its worth it. It makes gorgeous yorkshires.
I do agree about the more expensive batter mix though.0 -
i think the ready done shepards pies and lasganes for 1 person costing you 2.50! i can easily make a lasange for four with a fiver (with HM white sauce) yummy

I'd be happier paying £2.50 for a lasagne than 85p. And what can be made for four is not the same as what it costs to make something for one. If you are cooking for many then lots of savings and efficiencies can be made.
And just because you only use a fraction of an ingredient that does not truly reflect on the cost.
Lasagne -
minced beef - £1.90
onions/carrots - £0.50
pasta sheets - £0.90
milk - £0.45
cheese - £1.90
butter - £1.30
So that's nearly £7 upfront. Even portioned out you are still talking more than £2 in raw ingredients.
Shepherd's pie is a bit cheaper
minced lamb - £2.30
carrots - £0.35
potatoes - £1.30
milk - £0.45
cream - £0.60

Hello All
I would say biscuits flapjacks and victoria/plain sponge cakes and muffins. HM taste better, have no artificial additives, and flour, marg, sugar etc are reasonably priced and last ages. This means you can make lots more for the price of a shop bought cake.
Trouble is - OH loves HM cake/ biscuits - so i would say that HM lasts less time because they get eaten quicker:)

I noticed the price of a victoria sponge in Morrisons just last week - 2.99!!!0 -

Surely no pre packaged item MSE's buy is a waste since we are all so careful to only buy when either reduced or on offer & ensure we find use for 100% of it!0
