Buying an American Fridge/Freezer. Which one?

Will be looking to buy one of these inthe next year (new build) and I am struggling to find reviews (Which haven't done one on the American ones)so any pointers would be appreciated. Can I make a couple of sweeping satememts which hopefully some of you can confirm or dispel.

Choice is fairly limited...LG or Samsung?

Samsung are still having problems, have they been overcome?

Any more review sites (I have used appliance reviews)?

Any other makes worth considering? (Budget hopefully <£1000, mains plumbed, want ice cubes... :) )

Are we mad?

I have a Samsung, have had it for approx 6 years and no problems so far! It was definately a good buy, I don't know how I used to fit all my food in my old fridge!! I found that I didn't put as much in my freezer because I was able to fit more in my fridge, also the vegetable compartment keeps my veg fresher for longer. I would definately buy another, I haven't got the ice maker but I have got the water dispenser, which I do not use any more, it was a novelty at first but the fridge has alot of room to keep cold drinks in. I found that the ice maker took up room inside the freezer, and as I wanted a big space I decided against it. Also if I remember correctly you need the ice maker to be plumbed into the water mains. There is a review site called 'Reevoo.com' that has a section on American Fridge/Freezers.

There's definitely more choice than that, I'm happy to say. Must admit, though, after reading all of the Samsung horror stories, I wouldn't touch one of their fridge-freezers with even the longest bargepole in existence.

I have no experience with them, but I understand that Hotpoint, Neff and Whirlpool, amongst others, make relatively cheaper priced American fridge-freezers.

With a decent budget, however, I'd definitely rather go for something by Miele, Liebherr, Maytag, Bosch, Siemens, etc. Maybe check for deals or discounts on these to bring down the price a bit - especially if you are buying other appliances at the same time.

I have a whirlpool 25RID24 (doesnt look like they make it anymore - prob a newer model you will have to look for ) had it for nearly 2 years and no problems , we wanted one that did the ice (crushed and cubed) and had a decent amount of freezer space , as most of them at the time seemed big fridges but not much freezer . I have plenty of room to fit everything in for a family of 4 , not sure how we coped without it , one of our best purchases ever . you do have to buy filters for them so maybe worth taking this into consideration , ours has a water filter and an air filter costs around £35 a year in filters .
Plumbing it in is easy , you need a cold feed direct from the kitchen tap and it is just like a washing machine connection that then a rubber hose fits on that goes to the fridge.

If you search this forum there are a few threads asking this question.

For the record, I have an LG (no ice maker or water dispenser) and I've been very happy with it.

    I've been Money Tipped!
If you have the space, go for Admiral or Maytag, much deeper...
  • I too have an LG with chilled water and ice maker, and for the past 5 years its been trouble free, so from my personal point of view Id recommend LG

We've got a Daewoo with ice and water. It's been going strong for four years so far and still in perfect cosmetic and working order.

Very good value as well - cost £500 at Currys iirc, although there was some cashback and a code involved somewhere.

    Current model looks pretty similar.

Try www.jualdomestics.com to see if they have good prices for this type of thing. They seem to have over 100 models on their stock list.

I knew you guys would raise some valid points. Many thanks.

(Although I shouldn't be..kind of logical ) I am sursprised so many are suggesting the American makes and will look more throughly at them.

Very soft water area so hopefully filters won't be an issue but will check that out (hadn't thought about them)

Need to do some more reading on the Samsung issues (I'm in general quite a fan of Samsung)
