I've been scammed twice in 2 months on my PAYG phone on the 3-2-1 tarriff. Each time it happens I report it to Action Fraud, though their reporting process is rather tedious. The more people who do this, hopefully the more likely they are to take it seriously.

These scammers are tapping into an unregulated process, and have found a way of doing so without the victim having done anything to initiate it. It's no different from pick pocketing, apart from the fact you can take sensible precautions to prevent your pockets from being picked. There seems to be nothing one can do to prevent this

Large numbers of consumers have experienced unexpected charges to their phone accounts from scam subscription services.

The regulator, the Phone-paid Services Authority, is currently consulting on the regulation of these services, which is clearly inadequate at the present time.
All consumers affected by these scams, and any others who feel strongly that networks should not be passing their phone numbers to scammers for charging purposes, have an opportunity to have a say in the future regulation of these 'services'.
Information about the consultation, together with my own draft response, are here. Please feel free to copy and submit my own response, to amend or it as you wish, or to write your own response. The important thing is that PSA get a feel for the level of consumer dissatisfaction with the current 'Payforit' services.
We have an opportunity to put a stop to these scams, but only if we speak up and insist on change.

  • Thank you for this information- I came across this whilst searching what to do as charges were made against my account that I knew nothing about.

The response from O2 was initially unhelpful and they suggested I called the company directly, who then refused to speak to me when I explained why I was calling.

Thankfully O2 have now put a block on my account and agreed a refund (after 3 further complaints). I was surprised this wasn't initially the reaction I received. There should be the same recognition to customers as there is from banks when fraudulent transactions are made.

Hope this helps others in a similar position!
