Can you stack a fridge and freezer on top of each other?

Last year our upright fridge/freezer failed so we thought we would buy separate units as we (wrongly now) thought that would be more future proof.
But the house we are moving into next week only has space for an upright combined fridge/freezer. So I wondered if it is possible to stack separate units on top of each other.
Hope this is OK to ask in this board?

have you looked up the manuals online? You can find them for most manufacturers.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0

Hi, good luck with the move - its five years since I last moved and I still remember how exhausting it was!
I just had a quick check on the hotpoint site and stacking is a definite no-no as the casings are not designed for this (probably not your make, but I guess advice will be similar).
However, way back in the 70's I had a similar problem in a tiny kitchen and solved it by putting the freezer under the counter, and standing the fridge on top, so the counter took the weight. Don't know if this helps?
Edit - the alternative is to put the freezer in the garage/dining room/spare bedroom, as you probably don't use it as often as the fridge.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
I would have thought so. In terms of ventilation, since most fridge/freezers are designed to be under the kitchen worktop that shouldn't present a problem. Whether the one on the bottom can take the weight of the one on top you would need to check. Fridges are usually pretty light so it may be OK.
Only problem I could see would be that you would have to work out some means of attaching them together though or else one day you will open the one on top and it will slip off, which could be dangerous.0 -
Couldn't you simply get a housing unit made up for them so that the weight of one is not resting on the other? MDF ? Ask a local kitchen fitter.0

I may end up mackling something up but only after the move and I have my energy back!!!! The kitchen is in pretty good condition so I will have to make sure it doesn't look like a bodge. But still cheaper than selling off and buying a brand new all in one?0 -
Maybe someone on your freecycle group has the opposite problem & would like to swap?0

We used to have a purpose made rack for a tumble dryer to go on the top of a washing machine. Are they about the same dimensions? Wonder if that would work?
Just remembered they're called stacking kits.0
