I guess I'm the only person who feels creeped out when somebody at a checkout starts talking to me then :S.

It's been one of those days today where everything has gone wrong, from waking up this morning and finding the family pet had died through to the front of my car getting damaged whilst parked up at the shops, I was having a really crap day.

I called to pick up a couple of bits for dinner from Asda and the bloke on the checkout was such a cheery bloke it actually put me in a happier mood having had a brief conversation with him whilst he was putting the shopping through.

I think it was the first time all day I cracked a smile and felt a little bit cheery. So thanks Mr Checkout man, I hope you manage to brighten up other peoples day.
If you still have your receipt at the bottom (Ithink) it says how did we do today. Why not phone them and praise him I think they get some kind of award (?)
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

It is nice when that happens, some checkout operators can be so grumpy, just shoving your shopping through at a million miles an hour and grunting at you for money!

One sunday morning I wasn't too grateful for the happy cheery (loud) checkout girl though - immensely hungover with someone who seemed like she'd taken one too many happy pills, asking a million questions... could she not see my alka seltzers, irn bru (fab hangover cure!) and comfort food?! Not to mention my green face from feeling so sick :D

I had one once where she was more interested in checking her mobile phone. She broke 2 6 packs of eggs by throwing them down to the bagging up area. To top if off when i put my card in to pay neary a full 2 mins later she said put your pin number in, after I had done and it had cleared, and don't take you card out until it has gone through. I looked at her and basically said don't worry dear I'm paying attention. At least she blushed. I avoid her like the plague now.

Depends really, I'm creeped out by people who ask lots of questions, especially if it's the kind of conversation you'd usually only have with friends. A bit of banter I quite enjoy, and it's nice when the person on the till compliments something you're buying.

I had a few issues with Asda receptionist a few weeks back, but the staff were fantastic, so when i made the complaint, i also sang the praises of those who had helped me.

i agree. the asda staff near me have been told to be WAY over friendly. to the point where any time i buy an item of clothing they go "aww that's lovely, i'm going to have to get one of them." or when i bought 3 white shirts and they said "have an interview do you?" and i so nearly replied, "yes i am wearing 3 shirts to an interview :S"

Well done for getting in touch with the store to pass on your positive experiences. I think we become too engrossed in all the bad things and forget to give praise to people who do genuinely try and go out of their way to be friendly and approachable.

Tsk Tsk Imagine that. The cheek of some people. A lowly checkout operator actually trying to make conversation with a customer. They ought to be ashamed. Do they not know that they are supposed to be seen and not heard. I, for one, will never frequent Asda again.

Bear in mind they are doing a repetitive job and it gets very boring. I always try to strike a conversation unless I am in a bad mood.

When I used to work in Domino's and answering phones I would try and have a conversation when I was waiting for card machine or whatever. You'd be surprised how many people actually get to know you.
