Masking the smell of my neighbours stinky garden.
Hi
Im looking for something to cover the smell of my neighbours stinky garden.
My nextdoor neighbour has a dog and as she is quite old she doesn't walk the dog, so the dog does all its business in the garden which isnt cleaned up very often, tbh we have lived here 2 months now and havent once seen anyone doing the poop scoop.
Anyway, everytime we go in our garden all we can smell is the dogs business, mainly dog pee and as everyone will know it stinks, more so on a nice day when its warm, so im looking for something that will give off a nice smell to put along the side of our garden to mask the nasty smell, preferably not something that costs a lot or something that attracts loads of bees or wasps, as me and my daughter are petrified of them.
Im not clued up on flowers/plants so any advice would be great.
Thanks

Anything that gives off a strong smell is going to attract insects such as bees ect that the point on a plant being smelly.0

Had a similar problem with neighbours whose 2 dogs were tied outside on their patio. They rarely cleaned it up so we had to ask Environmental Health to give them a shove along. They were just plain lazy rather thean not able to look after the poor dogs.
It will be difficult to prevent this stench in a single season never mind all year round but summer will be the worst.0 -
I sympathise with you, my neighbour has a dog to that lets it do its buisness in garden.
I refuse to replace a fence which is about to fall down because he wont offer to help pay nor will he maintain his side as I do mine even though is leaning badly
I just painted it last week with stain but its just to make it look nice. 3 years lived here and not once has he done his side.0 -
Bees etc will be attracted to most scented flowers but probably less so to scented foliage plants such as Thyme, Verbena, Basil, Lemon Balm, Lemon Grass, Rosemary, Mints and of course a camomile lawn.there is info on some scented foliage plants hereyou have to watch out as some of them have flowers attractive to insects as well as having scented leaves.0

I am getting a Lavatera Rosea on near my neighbours fence to hide away from them0

Further thought, if you are going to be sitting out in the garden then various mints that you can brush/crush kept close to the seating (in tubs/buckets unless you don't mind it taking over) would probably be the cheapest and easiest thing to grow.0

Some carnations give off a nice aroma as do the herb thats called the curry plant

Honeysuckle, Nicotiana, Hyacinth, Lilly of the valley. All strong, nice smells.
jasmine is a very strong sweet smell that lasts along time. very easy to take care of and spreads very well. plant it by the fence and train it to creep the length of the fence.0 -

That sounds like a lovely Bee Border. They love every single one of those plants.
I think it'd be lovely.
Bee's aren't scary at all. They're a gardeners friend and need out help at the moment. Do you want your Daughter growing up petrified too? It must limit things some times. They'll have no interest in you whatsoever.
Megansmum on here, used to have a bad phobia, but managed to beat it. Search for her "is it worth it?" thread, where she was about to give up gardening because of insects.0 -

TBH with you ive already had a discussion regarding my phobias on here and have no interest in discussing it again, not on here anyway, people are far too judgemental on other peoples phobia's.0 -
Get a few glade plug ins, that should be unnatural enough smell to not attract bees.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0
