I often wonder why supermarkets don't set up a scheme where the 'reduced' items are donated to charities that help the homeless, and those in extreme poverty.

I am sure there are regulations that prevent them doing so, which is a shame.

  • I work in Tesco (Gillingham) and I get so annoyed at how rude and obnoxious people are when it comes to ys...I once had a guy rant at me because there were no ys left (Im a checkout chick, not even my area) and I told him, that if there wasnt any there then probs nothing to be reduced or its already been sold...he said "f8cking tesco, why cant you reduce stuff later" it was 10.30pm!

I was threatened with violence in Asda a few months ago by an old guy who had an armful of gammon joints reduced to 70p. He didn't want me to have one.
He was so aggressive that the assistant came and found me later in the checkout queue to apologise.

I call the reduced shelf 'the salmonella shelf'...

Hehehehe we call it compost corner, it's quite entertaining to stand back and watch the vultures all fight for what in a lot of cases is either so large a pack of food they would only eat 10% of it or they grab several packs of a product that can only be used within 24hrs. Myself I wouldnt touch the stuff.

A lot of the time stuff can be frozen though, so I will buy it on that basis. Our local Tesco do some quite good pastry reductions (croissants etc.) My two boys like those and a day or so after the sell by won't kill you (I hope).

I find it bizarre that they are so aggressive over it, if they went to lidl they'd get the stuff at an even lower price than the reduced one and with no hassle!

ive not witnessed anything like the op descibed but when i was at sainsburys teh customers did go frantic, notalot pushing though but when it did it was very worrying that it does happen

I see this a lot to, maybe they should go out back to reduce- but also it is really very sad state of affairs that they should have to!!

this is maybe what i should have suggested we do when i was at sainsburys but most of the time you dont have the time to put them in a trolley to take out back, reduce it then put it back on the shelf,
