have you done the second part of the instructions where you tell windows your ssid and encryption key?

if you do start, run, ncpa.cpl does a wireless network show in there?

Doh! Just call me a dumbass - have found the physical address now! Was using desktop not laptop to find it!

(Feel free to shout at the computer and I promise I'm not blonde!)

Stuck again

Have got to the bit where I've clicked on the knowledge base, clicked the V3 router as that's the version I've got and this is the screen I get. Can't see the firmware version V3.....

Do I just use the version 1.1?

just forget the firmware update (1.1 is for north america not uk)..

The instructions were written for the version2 router, which is exactly the same, but has more versions of firmware available, because it's been around a bit longer..

so just skip the firmware update, it's not needed in your case.

Thanks so much for all your help.

Managed to do everything but now the laptop can't find the network at all!! :eek:

Going to leave it for tonight before I end up throwing it down the stairs!

It's probably a mismatch of ssid or encryption key, if you've used the https://www.grc.com/passwords site, sometimes it put's quotation marks in the key, if so replace them with another character, and make sure there is no space on the end. Use copy and paste, to paste them from the router to your laptop, to make sure you don't make them different. You can put your own key in, but it makes it less secure.. it's worth doing properly if you have the patience, once it's done, you won't have to touch it again.

The rest of my original post goes through some diagnostics you could try.

you might want to tell the neighbours to do theirs as well,, their emails will be flying through the air unencrypted, for anyone to read..

the other point of potential trouble is interference from the neighbours, you should try and choose a wireless channel as far away from theirs as you can.. you can use netstumbler to find out what they are using.

of you do start, run, ncpa.cpl and right click on the wireless network connection, then do properties, and wireless networks, is use windows to configure wireless network ticked?
