I have taken to batch cooking to save money and time, I have so far made cottage pie, lasagne, chicken stew and beef stew and now I am stumped for ideas.

    What do you do?

I am looking for cheap ideas, six or so medium portions per each batch.

    Any ideas - thanks!

    Lisa

    bolognese
    chili
    fish pie
    tarka dal
chickpea curry - in fact, whenever I make any curry, I cook double at least
    saag aloo
    saag chana dhal
    soup
    pies

Plus a big batch of naan breads or chappatis, to eat with all those curries !

How about batch making some puddings for speed, economy and to fill up the last bit of space in those tummies?

    Fruit pie / crumble
Sponge cake / treacle pudding etc

All great fillers and lovely to eat when its cold and horrid outside
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.
  • I definitely recommend soup. Cheap & freezes nicely!
    meatballs
    curry
I've frozen lots of Gorden Ramsey's hot chocolate fondant (very easy to make).
  • Soup of all varieties - my latest was ham & split pea, The gammon hock did 4 meals with cauli cheese - two rounds of sarnies today and the last bit for the soup. Not bad for a £1.50 joint.

Today there's 9 chicken pies with gravy gone into the freezer for DD and 9 minced beef in gravy for DS.

I also make double cheese sauce and freeze the left overs

  • If you want to go into pastry, I used to make quiche. Blind bake the pastry case and the fill and freeze the flan raw. When needed, it can be taken out and cooked from frozen, as I remember for about half-hour.
  • I batch cook stews, bolognaise, lasagne, chilli, curry, soup, chicken pie, meat and potato pie, tuna fishcakes, fishpie, I also make meatballs, kofta kebabs and burgers and freeze them too.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I batch cook parts of dishes as well as full dishes - so I have plenty of portions of tomato-based sauce, cheese sauce, as well as prepped veg portions - par-boiled and par-roasted winter veg to pop in the oven from frozen, potato/swede/carrot mash (some separately, some mashed together), cooked, stuffed baked potatoes. I find having the side dishes to a main course very helpful for days when I'm shattered and while grilling a couple of chops is OK, peeling, chopping and cooking veg is just beyond me!
  • Great thread everyone!

I've recently been doing some batch cooking from "Economy Gastronomy" book - i did the braised mince at the weekend for cottage pie, spag bol and chilli con carne. As there is only 2 of us i made 6 meals.

Ubamother - can i ask how you batch cook your baked potatoes?

As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread to give you more ideas ;)
