make your own burgers and freeze them, then take out and cook when you want :)

Burgers, now were talking! Is this just mince and onion? (and anything else you wanna put in, like cheese)...

I bought some mince once but just ended up frying it and putting it into a sandwich. Didnt know what else to do with it, but it was on special offer, so would have been rude not to buy it.

    Quite like stew!

Rikki, I think I got a slow cooker in the loft. Will have a look, at some point!

LOL seriously though. I go buy it. Individual portion, say £1.50.

I make it, thats buying all the ingredients (and more than I need), the oven eating electric, couple of hobs eating electric, and I create myself a whole load of washing up.

Thats my whole problem with it. Still wanna give it a try, but just an observation more than anything else. It should, afterall, taste better home made, but thats kinda a touchy subject with me.

If you batch cook you only get a lot of washing up first time. The rest is frozen and then just made into a meal with all the things you would normally use.

If you break down the price you pay for the main ingredients and the work out the number of meals you get for the cost of those ingredients it works out cheaper.

mince, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg (to bind), then anything else you like (I chuck in some red jalapenos ) mix it all together, press in to your burger shape and freeze until required

You'll get five or six decent size burgers from a 500g packet of mince

Graham the way I make burgers

mince, grated onion (my kids don't really like onion so I grate it so they don't know it's there but I also think it blends better than when it's chopped) bread crumbs, a beaten egg and salt and pepper. Mix all together then shape. Easy peasy.

My kids refuse point blank to eat shop bought burgers now, they prefer mine. To freeze them make sure you put a bit of grease proof paper between each one, or they stick together in one solid burger block.

I also make turkey burgers in the same way but add sage too, they are really tasty and low fat.

Ahhhh, so thats where I went wrong last time. I was trying to make the burger shapes but just with the mince. Thats why it ended up pretty flat and breaking up in a sandwich.

Will deffo do the burgers this weekend, thanks :)

So I need... Eggs, Onions, Mince, Greaseproof paper, Breadcrumbs.

Ok, makind a shopping list :)
  • Graham, when you say baking trays, I assume you also have an oven ? ;) What sort of thing do you like/dislike eating, to give us some clues ? I also live on my own and am just starting to get back into restocking my freezer with home made stuff as I'm also of the " oh gods, can't bear eating the same thing three days running " school of thought. I've always made soups from scratch and they are defintely a good base to start from. If I were you I would invest in a cheap wand blender, they are brilliant for making soups, smoothies, pates, breadcrumbs etc. Also well done for hoarding the plastic takeway containers, I have found they make excellent freezer containers !

I like to cook my onions first before I make the burgers. Just personal taste.

    I do, and a grill :D

Soup I REALLY don't get the point of turning the hobs on for. 29p in lidl's, and lovely too!

Sort of stuff I like? Well in my freezer at the moment, I have potato smilies, bacon, fish fingers, pieces of fish, breaded chicken, pizza, and a variety of tesco value ready meals, along with some more up market, standard tesco ready meals ;)

But getting real bored of it all.

Whats started all this, was another thread, where I was told to try farm shops. And now I'm adicted to their sausages. They really are different from supermarket ones. So I'm thinking 'make my own stuff'.

In my fridge, I have milk, a lump of probably gone off cheese, a tub of butter and lager...oh and some jam. Everything I put in there goes off. It's a complete nightmare. I like salad, but means I got to eat it for 4 days otherwise it just goes stinky.
