It doesn't void the warranty at all. I used an eBay merchant, which I was a bit wary of, but it worked. Not sure if I can name them here but it was £6.99 and the code came within two hours.

All I can say is that so far I have had no problems with my Desire on T-Mobile. Perhaps I'm just lucky. Used it for the last 3 days on 3G and HSDPA with the occasional trip to slower modes when signal was weak. Fingers crossed it says that way for me. !! Good luck everybody. !!

I've now terminated my contract with '3' over this issue, and they accept that it is a problem with their branded Hero and quite possibly with the Desire. However, I have since 'rooted' my phone and installed the 'Villain 5.5 Rom', and am able to change the priority of the connections, i.e. to prefer WCDMA, GSM, and so on. I initially tried the 'GSM (auto PRL)' setting to see the effect on battery life-I think it improved it. But I then changed the setting to GSM/CDMA (auto PRL), and have not had the connection drop once yet. The original setting on my Hero was, I think, WCDMA preferred which meant it was trying to hang on to a crappy 3g signal that wasn't good enough for data.

I have no idea if these settings are available on a non-rooted phone since I only saw the thread after I'd rooted mine.
