htc desire internet access 3g probs

  • Only had mine for a week and not used it on 3G lots as yet, mainly wifi however - when I have used 3G it's been ok so far. Going on the road with it this week so will report back. !!
  • Well, so far so good I'm getting what I would call normal 3G and (even better) HSDPA on t-mobile with the Desire in what I'd describe as an average signal area. No problems all day basically.

In fact I'm posting this from the phone!!!!! Still getting used to the keyboard tho.

do a google search on htc desire and 3g access problems. see the results.

the vodafone has a thread on their forum about this issue. http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/topic/58225-htc-desire-3g-data-connection-issue/page__pid__381432__st__0&#entry381432

similar threads can be found on the android forums and also Tmobile forums.

tmobile forums seems to have deleted some thread regarding this issue!!! as i cant find them now.

see this post among many on the net about 3g access problems and app problems

But according to Engadget, HTC has figured out the problem (with the Legend at least) and it's simply 'camera incompatibility'.

i think some can have a quick work around instead of wating for htc to solve the issue as i found quite a few saying that opera browser still worked even if the default browser from htc didnt work. so all networks should supply the opera browser next to the default browser, till this issue is sorted by HTC, but looking at the numerous htc hero threads on android and tmobile and other forums i doubt if this issue will go soon!

Makes no difference whatsoever on my phone. If I can't access the network through one application I can't get access through any, not even Opera. Connection errors all round.

what network and what phone do you have? have you downloaded some apps, delete them one by one and see which apps caused it, if that is the cause. does the sim work in another phone, you must have an old phone around. see if it is the SIM. see the threads on android forums and see if any other answers help. how old is your handset, have you tried returning the phone as not fit for the purpose.

  • HTC Hero on '3'. They are aware of the problem as is widely known. They refunded a months line rental to me because of it (although they actually added £20 to my bill instead of deducting it-yet another call to sort it out). I really can't be bothered to uninstall my apps one by one etc because I'm certain that the issue is a combination of the network data connection and the removal of the 2g option. I think the phone tries to hang on to a weak 3g signal which is not good enough for data transfer rather than reverting to 2g or EDGE. There appears, to me at least, to be a problem with the Hero/Legend/Desire being able to seamlessly switch between any kind of data connection, be it Wi-Fi, HSDPA, 3g or EDGE. It is also interesting that I can never connect with just 3g-it is always either HSDPA or EDGE (i.e. when 3g is apparently available it connects with the 'H'-if it stays on 3g it will not connect).
I should also say that my Hero is a replacement for my Nokia n97 () which I returned as being not fit for purpose, and had I not been offered the Hero on what was, at the time, a good deal, I would have terminated my contract with '3'.
I am awaiting a call back from the technical department (:rotfl:) on the 6th of May at 4.30pm to discuss whether the recent local network upgrade (:rotfl:) has solved my data connection issue and will post back with their explanation/solution.

have you got the proper software updates for the handset from the manufacturer http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=283&act=sd&cat=all try and see if getting the HTC firmware helps instead of having the generic three version. see if that is the cause of the problem. i dont know if the generic three version can be replaced by the original htc version. just guessing.

No it can't. The '3' firmware is about as up-to-date as can be though. I'm just going to see what '3' have to say, and wait for the 2.1 update if it ever comes.
To be honest I can't think of a recent smartphone that doesn't have problems; iPhone, Windows Mobile or Android. When it works the Hero is an outstanding device, and when something better (without battery, connection or OS flaws) comes out I'll consider that. Until then I'll labour on with my imperfect phone/network combo!
  • Quick update;
I've just unlocked my HTC Hero and tried my Orange SIM and EXACTLY the same 3g connection failure happens, from which I can only conclude that the phone itself, and not the network, has a big, big problem.
