The only thing I would do willfullly is offer to be dismissed rather than seeing my bro to prison IF it got to that. Work is work. Family is family.
People make mistakes in life and you have to live and learn from them. My brother made a very dumb and costly mistake and I am sure he has learnt his lesson.
Okay - "work is work - family is family". BUT "a thief is a thief" and should get whats coming to them regardless of them being family.
As was pointed out earlier - all the crimininals etc do have families. Some families are perfectly normal - but have a member who is a "black sheep". At that point family loyalty ends...and things should take their course, rather than being thwarted by a normal member of the family. How will these people (ie thieves) learn otherwise - if they are being shielded from the consequences of their folly by others?0 -

The OP will be sacked. The OP does not come across well and his story sounds extremely unbelievable, that coupled with his attitude and I would expect them to suspect he was involved in the incident far more than it just being his brother and hence dismiss.
If we read the story through it really just isn't believable.
I tend to agree with that.
I am certainly wondering about the discrepancy in the location of the phone in question. I am also wondering how come the Police havent been brought into this already (by O.P.).
I presume the general attitude towards life/phraseology of O.P. is reasonably "standard" for the type of work environment O.P. is in - hence why someone with that attitude has lasted as long as they have there (wondering if O.P. is something higher-up in the current "banking/finance world"?).
Whatever sort of work environment O.P. operates in (and its clearly very different to that most of us have) - there are some sort of limits somewhere and maybe O.P. has just come up against them...Even if its a work environment with the same "attitude to life" as O.P. has (ie "gimme the money and thats the only apparent consideration in life there is") they might have some sort of standards that they expect adhered to.
Time will tell. If its a work environment with some sort of standards - then O.P. is probably "up for the high jump". If its a pretty immoral/money first, foremost and last type work environment then O.P. will probably succeed in blustering and bluffing his way right through this and keep his job.0 -

I *think* they're a relatively junior IT techie. And exceptionally immature/naive about most other things (cars etc). I daresay it's upbringing that's shaping the OP's response than the working environment.I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

I will update you all later. Put it this way, this forum has shown me a few shades of how people think. Some people are understanding and can accept that mistakes happen and one cannot prepare for unimaginable events. And when they occur you can only act within REASON. And others are complete and utter sellouts and would sell their souls to the devil - "Should've called the Police OP" - (oh yea, that's the first thing one would think/do when they find out their younger brother has done something seriously stupid). When someone is troubled, you try and HELP them, rather than persecute them for their genuine mistakes. Some people lurke and thrive on putting people down by playing the role of Chief Inspector despite the facts. I don't mind criticism but do it with a little compassion and tact as some had done earlier on in the forum, which I greatly appreciate. I thank most of you for the encouragement for my good/bad decisions in this case. God bless you all. Others, God bless you too. Just to keep you filled in though - An investigation was done, All the evidence corroborated (including the inspection of itemised billing), I took reasonable enough measures to place the phone out of sight (although it could have been done better), my personal mobile itemised bills clearly showed I was using this as my work device, No Disciplinary Action was taken, I paid the full amount within a day.0

My mate used to work in a T-mobile call centre and if you moan and complain enough that you didn't know about the roaming charges they can let you off at their discretion without paying for all the charges or at least the full amount if it is your first time.0

thats wasnt really an issue here though0 -
Interesting one.
I've had a work's mobile phone - didn't really need one but hey ho! - and I was made perfectly aware that all bills were monitered. If you wanted to make personal phones calls on it, you had the option of having a set sum deducted from your salary which a couple of people chose to do.
Many many years ago my mum was called in and questioned about the number of personal phone calls made on a land line, when she was going through a really messy divorce, and they allowed her to pay for the calls with nothing said.2014 Target;

Look, no-one's judging you here, or a few are, but that's what you do and should expect to get on a message board/public internet forum. But, in a spare moment I read through a few of your previous posts... which seemed to involve not paying MOT or dodgy car crash and something to do with insurance etc
It doesn't look great if you compare where you put your mobile either in briefcase/locked in a drawer whatever... in this case. and sorry to say but with your FWW, well people don't just get them handed out like sweets, mate.
You're extremely lucky you got away with it this time.
Personally I think your character leaves a lot to be desired for someone who's almost 30 and married. You seem quite immature in more ways than one. A bit of a lad. But I know a few IT guys I've worked with of a similar age who're exactly the same as you.
Oh yeah and I loved your comment 'I'm giving out IT advice for free' in a previous reply/response was it to paying 15% service charge in USA (which by the way they deserve and you shouldn't criticise that) - no-one's handcuffing you here and making you give out your free IT advice, are they now?

also - that's BIG of you to pay the full amount within a day, seeing as how before you were quite willing to 'have it taken out of next month's pay packet' or 'use the wife's CC'.
all this smacks of irresponsibilty ie not willing to take responsibility for your actions. I know 14 year olds who are more honest and willing to take the rap than you are, mate. Oh and GOD BLESS. :A0
