Bath in the bedroom

  • How on earth do these people not have condensation and damp problems? - if I go in the shower or bath, as soon as I am out I open the window wide and close the door to keep the steam from coming into the rest of the house... yet over time, a little bit of mildew develops in the nooks and crannies... when I have the time and money I would like to tile the bathroom from floor to ceiling so that there is no paintwork to wash down, to avoid this.

I cannot think how these people keep their bedrooms dry and fresh... presumably if you have a bath in the evening you have to chuck the window open and sleep in a freezing room? I hate humid, clammy rooms!

Nice idea, but you would definitly need to be of a glamourous ilk to ever use it....or only ever take pamper style baths when you have hair free legs, only using bath soak and not involving soap or washing your hair,

Oh and never have to deal with a soggy carpet, or be concerned about peeling wallpaper, or steamed up mirrors.

Just like in a hotel really.

There are worse ideas. I viewed a house where a loo had been fitted in a bedroom. It was in the open on one side of the room. This had been done for an elderly lady so she did not need to walk so far in the night.

It was more of a talking point than a selling point I think.
  • I think something semi-open plan works. This is the room we stayed in

The bath is on a tiled floor and there is a curtain between it and the bed.

Friends installed a bath in their bedroom as part of refurb work. We all commented on it when we looked around. They also have an en-suite, but for the reasons previously mentioned re the toilet, didn't want a sliding door option with a bath in the ensuite.

They did point out that they could easily remove it prior to selling if they felt it put people off. You do have to be very aware of condensation issues and site the wardrobes well away from the bath. Also make sure electrical appliance are moisture proof - they have a flat screen angled so it can be viewed from the bath and the bed. The whole bedroom is carpetted in bathroom carpet, to prevent water getting to the floor boards.

Every bath in the main room I've seen has looked bizarre and wierd and stupid.
We have bathrooms with doors for a reason.

You would need some sort of heat exchange venting system to keep the room dry.

If you want a view from the bath then put a new window in.

Grand Designs showed a build project somewhere in london. They squashed a house into the tinest space possible. The bath was under the bed. The bed base and mattress slid to one side revealing the bath underneath. Wouldnt have known it was there if they hadnt shown it. Great idea in a small house where their wouldnt be space otherwise.

I also saw an episode where the ensuite had a partial wall separating it from the bedroom and my first thought was that the smells wafting into the bedroom could be really horrible and the steam must cause damage.

It might work in a huge, well ventilated bedroom, with high ceilings. Otherwise I would be concerned that the added condensation coild cause mildew, which can be harmful to your health.

Any fabrics in the room would absorb the moisture. With curtains this wouldn't be a problem as they are hanging, and can dry out. However with a mattress and bedding you could get a build up of moisture.

On the plus side, you could hang your clothes over the bath, let them steam and save on all the ironing.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
