I went to Margate from JNB a couple of years ago and there were cheap SAA flights available from their website, depending on day and time. However, maybe they are only bookable within SA. Could your Dad book them for you? The plane is tiny and I think there were particular baggage restrictions but I can't be sure.
Having said that, I also drove to Durban and Umhlanga for the day while I was there. We went the "scenic" route but came back on the highway, which only took a couple of hours, so flying into Durban and driving from there would be easy.
The South Coast is lovely - I was staying in Trafalgar - and I am really envious of your Dad if he is going to live in the area.0
