  • On a good drive you can probably do it in 4 1/2 hours. Bad drive 6 hours.

One straight long road from Joburg to Durban. No turn offs. The only thing that does start adding up is the toll roads. Probably add another £50 on.
It is really not a bad drive. There are plenty of service stations on the way.

We always get a car. That way we are not restricted to what we can do and dont haev to rely on friends and family.

  • Thanks miss behaving, do you have any travel tips or advice? Anything to go see or anything to avoid?

Is that AF fare available from BHX?

  • Just looked on Airline Network
From Birmingham to Durban on Air France - £1076.80 for both of you including taxes.

That's a good price. The lowest fares UK-SA rarely go below GBP500 from my experience.

  • You could also make a posting on The Gumtree: http://www.gumtree.com

It's a site dedicated to travellers and there's always loads of Saffas on it.

Try posting an ad there and you should be able to get some good feedback as travellers are always looking for cheap travel options and a Saffa should know the cheapest way to visit home.

A friend of mine told me of a new-ish SA charter airline and I can't for the life of me remember it. I'm sure you should get an answer on the gumtree...

  • Thank you everyone...

Although i have just been speaking to my dad and he has told me he is planing on moving somewhere between shelly beach and port edward, I looked where these places are on the map and it turns out there is a closer airport in Margate (MGH) but I have tried to find flights from the UK to MGH but can't find any, can you not fly to MGH from the UK?

Looks like there are SAA flights from Jo'Burg to MGH.

So LHR-JHB-MGH is possible on SAA

  • You will pay stacks more for flights to Margate and all you will end up doing is getting a connecting flight again. I would seriously think about hiring a car then.

Margate airport is really small, and is not an international airport by any means.
To top it off, I think that there are only one or two flights a day into Margate from either Joburg or Durban.
Your connections may not work very well.
