  • I planted my first chilli seeds the other day. Honestly, you'd think I was 5 years old again with how excited I was. I've been looking at them three or four times a day and waiting impatiently for them to grow.

In fact, best go and check them now. :D

No, still nothing! Think the seeds weren't very viable.

Patience my dear, patience! Give them a chance. If nothing has shown after a couple of weeks they may not be viable as you suggest. I know exactly how you feel but the best thing is just to make sure they stay damp (in a plastic bag perhaps) but not sodden. smilie.gif

could anyone suggest a variety or two that could be grow outdoors in south east scotland (east lothian)?

i don't mind starting them off indoors, something i could put outside from about may/june would be good.

(although i'm a bit like Trying_really_hard and may just have a pop at it with some supermarket one on the window sill)

Do they have to be grown indoors even in the summer?

    Hi ZootHornRollo and simonne15,
As long as your chillie plants are in a sunny spot they should grow ok. They do like warmth to really do well (a lot depends on our fickle British weather). I plant my seeds mid Feb then put the seedlings in the greenhouse in April. Half of them go outside mid to late may. I am in the midlands, for East Lothian I guess it would have to be a bit later than that. Try planting them against a sunny wall (the wall holds heat and releases it at night).

Spanish Fryer, Numex Twilight, Cayenne and firecracker all seem to do well outside in good summers but have not done so well this year. In mid september I do bring some back into the greenhouse so I can get a few more fruits ripend off. You can also put the green fruits on a window sill to ripen.

The difference between outside and in is the number of fruits, you may get twice as many on a plant grown inside. Also as the plant dies back in September you may have a lot of green fruit still on it.

A good tip I was told for growing plants in growbags is not to lay the growbag flat and grow 3 plants but to fold it in half and cut along the fold. Each half will stand upright, plant one chillie plant in each half. The plants will have more depth to thier roots and its easier to put a supporting cane to them.

    Hope this helps.

What a fascinating subject.I bought a chilli plant from a garden centre just 3 weeks ago & I have never seen a plant grow so quickly. On the instructions it states "Suitable for polytunnel or greenhouse.Harvest when ripe.Plant inside in growbag.Water regularly".Changing the subject very slightly, when I was in Turkey I discovered black chilli powder on a stall at a market.I used it in my chilli con carni & really liked the aftertaste of every so slightly burnt. When I ran out I decided to have a go at making my own.I used the really large red dried ones from my local Indian supermarket & put them on a low heat in my oven until they started to blacken(beware as this happens quite quickly & fully burnt would not do) & then I put in my grinder to make into a powder.Lovely.

Now you have grown your chilli's here's what I do..blend into a pulp ( seeds included) with the odd clove of garlic or two..put into clean scewtop jars and cover with white wine vinegar..The bright colour will go very quickly but you can use this all year round..

  • I've only had mine for 8 days and it is already starting to flower!
    Yay!

Also, on a side note - Corriander, do any of you have tips?
Mine seems to look lush and green and within 2 weeks its starts to turn into a flower, how long until it turns back to the green flat leaf?
