    First post so be gentle!!

I have been growing chillies for about five years and make 90% of them into chillie sauce. It is cheaper and has no additives, also you chan change it about to your own taste.

    250gm chillies
    1 tablespoon ginger
    750ml white vinegar
    6 cloves of garlic
    2-3 teaspoons of salt
    3 cups of sugar
300gm saltanas (golden ones are best as the sauce remains red)

    De-seed chillies (wear gloves!!)
Put everything in a pan and simmer - 20 mins or until everything is soft.
Pass through a blender (sieve and reblend if you want)

Store in sterilised bottles, I make enough to last until the next harvest.

    Hope this helps someone
  • Save money buy going to the garden centers when the chilli fruits are ripe try one and ifyou like the taste take 2 dry them and grow your seeds from them.
I have been growing several variaties from this source for years.:money:
  • I have a plant I grew from a supermarket chilli on my windowsill. It has started to flower and has grown one chilli from it's first flower. All flowers after that one, instead of turning into a chilli have just dropped off, so I have just one chilli on it's own!

Does anyone know why and is there anything I can do to save the other flowers from dropping off?

I have just started growing chillis, on a windowsill, what size pots should I be using?! - I have Anaheim, Jalopeno, and Hungarian Hot Wax. They all came with starter pots, but they are now getting a bit big for those!

    Any suggestions??

I bought my first Habanero seeds from here, these are their general instructions. Hope this helps

Here's me thinking I'm the only chilli mad person around. I started with two varieties from packet seeds in two trays on a sunny window sill then transplanted them (lots & lots) into small pots. They have now been driven to my Aunties green house where they will spend the rest of their life until harvest time.

Do you recon it would be ok to substitute the sultanas for home grown plum tomato's???

    Hi Tomsolomon,
I think substituting sultanas for tomatoes would make it more of a chutney? If you want find a way of preserving your chillie and tomatoe crop then chutney is for you. There should be loads of recipies on the internet but I don't have one I'm afraid. If you find a good one let me know.

As an added note to my recipie above, I did once make it with Habanero chillies instead of milder red chillies. For five seconds it tasted like the sweetest jam in the world followed by feeling like being kicked in the face.
  • Hey Everyone,
I am a very keen chilli grower and am a member of the forums on www.firefoods.co.uk as well as loads of great advice (which I need, believe me!!) the people on there are very generous with seeds and do many swaps, also a 'pass the parcel' which you receive through the post, take the seeds you would like to try and add any seeds you want rid of then post it on to the next person on the list. Very good idea and works brilliantly. Have got loads of seeds which you would not normally find in the shops/ garden centres and the people are sooooooo friendly.
Hope to see you on there!

I've just discovered some Sweet Banana chilli seeds on my desk (previously misplaced  ) but I'm presuming it's too late to sow them now?

    Possible causes:
    1. Lack of pollination as it's inside there is no breeze or insects to help with pollination. So use your finger or a paint brush and pollinate the flowers yourself.
    2. Over watering it.
    3. Not feeding the plant weekly with tomato feed
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
