Not being able to pay contract on mobile.

I have just taken a Vodafone 18 month contract with a shiny new gadget. The liability is £540 over 18 months. BUT. I have £150 from quidco and £56 from recycling my old handset.
This £206 I am going to electronically transfer to the Vodafone bill via bill payment together with the balance of £334. Provided I don't go over the usage allowances I will be all paid up and can forget about it. After this time I will downgrade to a 30 day rolling arrangement.0 -

If it was, then why should I (and everyone else who does not need protection) pay for it?
If you take out a contract, you should only do so on basis you can afford to pay for it all from beginning to start.0 -

Very financially prudent - as you can afford it. And a recommended path for many people, if they can do so as well.
Me? I don't need the facilities of a all-singing-all-dancing mobile any more. Something robust that allows me to make calls and text and not a fashion accessory or tiny internet screen, so I'll stick with a rolling sim.0 -

Why should you or anyone else pay tax towards an unemployment benefit system you may not use? Or towards NHS services you may never need access to?
Why do you and everyone else pay extra on you council tax to cover those that do not pay theirs?
Why do you and everyone else pay extra on your car insurance to cover those that don't pay it?
Why do you pay taxes towards governement services you may not use?
I would pay a couple of quid more or forego a few inclusive minutes and texts to know that I, and others are covered in the event their circumstances mean they cannot pay.0 -

.
I'd go along with that!
It is not the same thing - and you know that. It is about time people took responsibility for their own actions and, as nothing is certain in this world - health or job wise - unless you can cover the full cost of what you want - and many of us can - then you should insure against health or job losses. Simple.
The dependency and benefit culture that is ruining this country needs to stop.0 -

Pointless comparison but lets go along with it....
NHS - Do we have a choice? No.
Council Tax - Do we have a choice? No.
Car Insurance - I don't have a car so don't really care.
Taxes to government? If I had a choice why would I pay for those services I do not use?
Add TV License - do I have a choice? No.
You want to pay a couple of quid more - go ahead and get payment protection insurance. That is WHY it is why those services exist. This is not communist state where one thing fits all - although it feels communist enough at times.0 -
You actually do have a choice with a TV Licence. Get rid of the telly and you dont need a licence.0

And ....?
What exactly do public services etc have to do with taking out a private contract where you fall behind payments and get into debit ... and in order to avoid that you want to legally impose a tax on everyone who takes out a contract rather than spend your OWN money on PPI.
On the basis of your argument, we would be protecting every nugget who falls enters into contracts and defaults.
The facility exists to protect yourself - that is why PPI is there for. Except you can get bet your bottom dollar, you will get people who take out PPI and they can't pay that let alone the contract.
In fact if what you say happens, I will gladly take out 100 contracts and default after a month and keep the shiny phones and the mobile companies can go to the wall. Ta.0 -
Op would it be an option to call Vodafone and downgrade your contract to whatever the cheapest one they offer is? Do youhave long left on the contract? It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0
