I store my spare duvet under my bottom sheet, makes a good 'mattress topper' and is so cosy in cold weather that if guests come to stay I begrudge taking it off to make up their bed! :p

we did that too Sparrer until we could afford a new bed, it stopped the springs that were coming through and stopped it feeling like we were sleeping on a bed of nails! :p

Recently we bought one of those fruit container which are sold with fresh mixed strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. I have kept that container for storing other fruit and veg and it's brilliant since it saves space in our small fridge. I have also found that by removing the plastic wrapping on fruit and mushrooms it stays fresh longer. We also store potatoes in a potato bag and this stops them from getting soft.

My OH's brother likes growing chillies but don't like eating them, so we are given loads every year and in the end the chillies got mouldy and thrown away. Not anymore, now the chillies go straight in the freezer, no need to defrost beforehand, just cut them up and add them to the cooking. Cutting them up is also easier.

Always use the toilet at work. you dont have to pay for the water or the paper..and you get paid to poo..

collect all the rubber bands that the postman drops,,make a ball out of them and give it to that annoying nephew as a Christmas present.

borrow your neighbours petrol mower, use their petrol and don't refill it. Just tell them you had the blade sharpened for them as it was needed. just give it a quick rub on the edge with a brillo pad.

if you live in a urban street with street lighting use the light out side instead of the one in your front room.

Next time your neighbour goes on hoiday and leaves you the key for emregencys go up to their loft drill a hole through run an extension lead from theirs to yours tap into their electric and run all your heaters, hair dryers, tumble dryer from that.

Becky2, I always freeze chillis and chop them into meals straight from frozen.
You can do this with ginger as well but it has to defrost a bit before it is safe to chop without you losing a finger.

I have also frozen herbs in the past. Parsley works ok but basil needs chopping finely first.:)

once its a bit warmer you could attach snap fasteners to your old duvet (with an old duvet cover over it) so that if its folded into a square its stays as a square. Means you can use it in warmer weather as a big cushion and if its a bit chilli unclick the fasteners and you've got a cover.

I had a thought on this this morning (when tidying away some stuff into the airing cupboard), instead of spending time sewing the fasteners on you could fold the duvet into a cushion sized shape and then tie with either a long ribbon/dressing gown cord etc and tie it like you would a parcel i.e lay the ribbon onto the square and then turn it over, cross the ribbon and twist it so its now on the other sides of the square, turn the square back over and tie the ribbon into a bow.

..........Now you have a decorative cushion with a bow that turns into a blanket very easily and is easy to tidy away.

Expensive car polishes especially the one that restores the plastic trim back to a wet looking black are expensive. I found that the instant shoe shine sponges (49p in Home Bargains) work a treat and don't mean any messy application and can be used inside an outside your car.

To keep my car smelling nice I put a few drops of essential oil onto a piece of cotton wool and leave this in the ashtray (which is unused. For a car that doesn't have an ashtray you can use the key tray etc in the middle of the car as this works well too). The smell will last 1-2 weeks and means I can swap the scent whenever I want without it costing me a lot.
