Will try the 'tato water, one less thing to throw down the drain
I tried the salt and kettle of boiling water tip from superscrimpers and it really worked on weeds between the slabs, but never thought of using the tato water..thanks for that, saves boiling the kettleAs there's only me in a king-sized bed, it seems silly to wash the linen when I've only used one small part of it so I turn the duvet and bottom sheet over, and swap pillows over between washes. The linen wears evenly, and it costs 50% less in laundry powder and electricity. Admittely the seams of the sheet are then on the outside but no-one is going to know but me :shhh:
sparrer, thanks for that ....I never thought of rotating the sheets/pillowsbut will in future
A few more I remembered:
Keep old shower gel bottles. When buy/gifted replacement decant half into old bottle and top up with water. Most shower gels are too thick and its hard to just get a small drop onto scrunchy as I have problems with my hands.

I'm sure that I remember someone quoting Asda's own version as the most convincing if you need to cheat:D
I just tell him that it's part of the 'grand plan' and if he wants different he'll have to buy it!:)The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Apparently this is not a good idea (watering down shower gel or anything else for that matter),as the water will introduce bacteria.A safer solution is to buy pump dispenser bottles and decant into that. You really do use less, especially if you wrap an elastic band round the pump thingy,so it doesn't go down all the way.0 -

I bought white vinegar recently in a Chinese supermarket. Can't remember the price, but it was a bargain.
About skin care - I may have posted this before, but I regularly get told that my skin looks younger than it is!
My "beauty" regime is this:
Wash morning and bedtime with COLD water. Dry with towel, put on a thin layer of baby lotion (last 500ml bottle was 8p from Sa*nsb*ry!)
That's it - apart from not smoking and not sitting in the sun - both are great producers of wrinkles! I use sun cream, but no make-up.) Oh, and eat plenty of fruit and veg!
I've used the baby lotion ever since my twins were born 48 years ago - bought it, then read that babies don't need anything on their skin, so as I couldn't waste it, I tried it on my own skin. Makes it feel soft and comfortable - highly recommended! (Though the big brand one in a pink bottle brings me out in a rash - I think it's the perfume in it.)Keeping two cats and myself on a small budget, and enjoying life while we're at it!0 -
My DH takes a tuna/ mayo/ cheese mixture that I make up for him to work every day to have on ryvita. He always insisted that I buy the tuna in oil rather than in brine as it is much nicer. Unfortunately, the oli one isn't on offer as often, and is generally more expensive.
Imagine my horror when I saw him opening the can himself and draining off all the oil:eek: and replacing it with olive oil, because it is nicer!!!!!
Okay then...... now I buy the cheapest brine one I can get (dolphin friendly of course), drain the brine and add the olive oil myself! I have been doing this for about 2 months now and he is none the wiser!:D
I do have to say one thing in his defence though, as he is a foreigner, and came from a country where branded 'foreign' foods were very expensive, he isn't tied to brands at all (apart from Joop which I now hate!) and is happy to have a cheaper alternative for most things.
Also, after having lived abroad for a wee while myself, I find it much easier to economise, eg, using squashed and battered fruit/ veg etc, as food was not all nicely standard in shape, and clean and all packaged up. You got what was cheap and in season, couldn't buy things like cream, and had to make do with whatever ingredients you could find.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

We save the brine from tuna and sweetcorn "water" (separately) into margarine tubs in the freezer for using when we make chinese soups etc.
We plan our meals and take the next day's meat/fish out of the freezer the day before to avoid using the microwave to defrost.
I always take a packed lunch to work - so many people there complain they're skint yet happily fork out £5 a day for a salad from the sandwich shop, then discard half as "there's too much to eat":hello:
