Must try that Sparrer (can't belive we're on this thread at the same time again), I use the water I cook my potatoes in as a weed killer. Very effective on the spiky weeds but not so much on grass between the slabs.

    I think we're stalking us unixgirl :D

Will try the 'tato water, one less thing to throw down the drain

I really need to do this, my boot is full. Although I do keep a small trug in the boot with cans of juice in it (bought on offer, HB does the best ones at the moment). This stops the "I want a drink" and having to pay £1 for a can!

.........although I can now beat the £1. My hairdresser told me yesterday she'd been out in Edinburgh (she told me the place name as well but didn't want to name them) and was in a bar. Nothing fancy, but was there for a friend's birthday. She was driving so wasn't drinking and asked for a can of a branded soft drink. ..............£4 !!!!!! she politely told them where they could stick it, and asked for tap water instead :rotfl:

Another one for saving the pennies is making sure your car/motorbike tyres are at the right pressure and checking regularly.

Thanks for re-starting this thread and for sharing so many good money saving tips.

Like mumofthetwins, I bake as well. Once a month or so I make my own breakfast muffins which I bring in to work and eat as a midmorning snack, this saves money since I don't get tempted to buy "treats" at work. I also bring a flask with coffee into work, a few years ago I used to spend £60 on capuccino's but no more.
No toiletries challenge, started 18/1/2010 - Putting £1 in my savings jar for every item that I use up. Pot 1 to 4 = £261. Pot 5=£23
    Boots points:£39.21. Extra money in 2012:£674.59. In 2013 £603.48. 2014: £85. 2015: £0 :j

I have just thought about another money saving tip. Buy stronger coffee and use less coffee instead. We buy expresso coffee and use 5 spoons of coffee for 10 cups and this makes us the perfect cup of coffee. With the weaker coffee we would have used around 7 spoons.

As there's only me in a king-sized bed, it seems silly to wash the linen when I've only used one small part of it so I turn the duvet and bottom sheet over, and swap pillows over between washes. The linen wears evenly, and it costs 50% less in laundry powder and electricity. Admittely the seams of the sheet are then on the outside but no-one is going to know but me :shhh:

If you have a fish tank and wonder what to do with the dirty water, use this to water your plants they love it! Its acts as a natural fertiliser, much better than buying fertiliser.

We have a towing caravan and in the better weather take lots of trips.

We believe in having frequent breaks so stop usually in the lorry park of the service areas.

Buying stuff in the service area is quite pricey so we always take food with us. The tip though is, instead of buying a huge tea each, we buy one and we keep some disposable polysterene cups in the car so pour half the tea into one of them and have half each, it is more than enough.

Another thing we do is, in our car anyway it is difficult to find somewhere to park your sandwiches so we keep two small plastic baskets in the car and you can put them on your lap with your food in there. Also my DH takes one with him to buy the tea as sometimes the container is red hot and it makes it easier to carry.

a mini-flask (200ml, really meant for milk if you have tea/coffee in a a lrger flask) fits neatly into most handbags for a coffee on the way to work without having to cope with one of those beaker things as well as bag and paperback etc
  • Plant the idea of a sleepover in DD's head for a date that DD is back with your ex. Then he gets the ice-cream, chocolate, pizza, crisps, coke, DVD rental and "essential cosmetics" bill and the house of screaming girls who don't want to sleep... bliss :D
