Your daughter has my deepest sympathy. I'm a brunette, but otherwise you might have been describing me at that age. I hated my hair for years. Oddly enough, it was only when I stopped fighting it, that I learned to like it. I never brush it - brushing makes it frizz. I wash and condition it every day, run a comb through it when wet and leave it to dry. When I get it cut, I ask the hairdresser to just "trim off the crispy bits" and leave it one length, without layering/thinning it out. (That way, madness lies.) It's nearly at my waist now.Naomim said:
My daughter is a redhead and curly. I swear she developed a twitch as a toddler with every old lady touching her hair 🤣 she's 11 now and has had it cut short. I usually have mine cut every two - three years. I'm also curly so grow it, get bored of putting it in a pony every day, cut, grow. Never ending cycle. 🙄ladyholly said:I didnt say it was a waste of money just that I am too stingy. I quite understand it is essential for others. I think my dislike of hairdressers comes from being a redhead in that when I was younger every time i went there was some old lady saying what beautiful hair, you arent having it cut etcetc and then having a whole conversation with the hairdresser about my "beautiful" hair. As I hated my hair anyway it really made the whole thing quite traumatic.
It wears me - the only styling decisions I make are whether or not to put it up in a ponytail when it annoys me, or to plait it. When I had to wear my hair up for work, I wore it in a French pleat - I never managed a bun - or a ponytail. Down, it will form loose ringlets. On more than one occasion, these have proved irresistible to women sitting behind me in the cinema - or once, on a bus - who just had to play with my hair!

I'm totally impressed by the amount of work you're doing to keep yours looking nice. I go to quite drastic lengths (ha ha) to avoid washing mine due mainly to the effort and time it takes.PipneyJane said:

I always comb it, never brush, wash my comb daily and change my pillowcases weekly. I also don't touch it with anything but clean hands and can usually manage to go around 4 weeks between washes.
Mine needs neatening at the ends yearly but as I have to stand up rather than sit in the salon for the cut and it's long enough to go down the plug hole in the basin when they're washing it I'm not keen so I only go when it's a real need.7 -
I used to sit behind a woman at work with the most beautiful shoulder-length ringlets. Sometimes I found myself wondering how long they would be if I stretched them down - but I would NEVER dream of actually doing so! I can't believe an adult would think it was okay to just play with a stranger's hair! I don't think it's any less intrusive than touching someone's body without their consentPipneyJane said:Down, it will form loose ringlets. I completely understand what you are saying Sadie but when I read it I marvelled at how adults can still feel that childlike awe.........and act on it. Sweet.....

Use used ziplock or food bags for pots that have seedlings in them when you put them on your windowledge.
Use any form of spread or yoghurt pot for starting several seedlings instead of a seed per pot, then simply pot on from there.
Use the large yoghurt pots for painting so you can either line with a plastic bag to reuse, or dispose of it. I use them for gloss paint so I can carry smaller amounts. And they have a handle.

Regarding hair, I too hate going to the hairdresser and since developing vertigo related to ear problems 12 years ago I haven't been . I asked the hairdresser to keep the dryer away from my ears but she couldn't and it made me feel awful. I have now learned to make my own 'messy bun scrunchies' . 8 inches of elastic (about half inch wide it doesn't matter too much) a length of cotton type fabric at least 2 or 3 times the length of elastic and about 3 inches wide. sew the fabric into a long tube , thread the elastic through and join ends and join the tube. scrunchy made.
It's difficult to describe how I make the bun but I form a pony tail shape with my hair and use two twists of scrunchie then twist my hair around the ponytail , make a third loop of scrunchie and put that over the bun of hair and tuck the loose end of hair underneath. No other hairbands required. The cotton fabric doesn't slip and is very comfortable. It works for me and hope it helps someone else. When my sons got married I covered the bun in clip on silk flowers and people said it was lovely! So still no hairdresser !!
I am another 'once ginger now sort of strawberry blonde ish' who got fed up with people telling me how lovely my hair was when I was a child and had it cut short as soon as my mother would let me !!Decluttering, 20 mins / day Jan 2024 2/28 -
Ive just been clearing my shed and found a load of baby food jars. They've been in there years as my daughter used to save them for me for small jams etc. The lids are no good and as far as I know you cant buy lids to fit. Ive just transplanted some seedling tomatoes into them . Watching the roots grow will be interesting. You could grow anything but of course have to be careful not to drop them. I also found a fair amount of plastic tubs without lids. Ive used them for sewing seeds instead of buying any pots.

I can't believe that the last post on this thread was in March!
I think that it's been mentioned before, but I'd like to rave about one of my favourite ingredients: cooking bacon. L!dl sells a kilo for £1.49. I'll split the kilo up into 4 or 5 and use a portion for quiche, another for a different flan recipe from my repertoire, the third for bacon sandwiches on a Sunday, the fourth for Cuban-style black-bean stew and add a portion to my Bolognese sauce.
