Friend of mine grew her potatoes in the buckets that supermarkets put all thier bunches of flowers in. Morrisons sometimes sell them off in groups of ten taped together for a pound. The containers are not huge in size but my friend is happy enough with the results.Healthy eating aim per day: 3 fruits, 3 or more vegetables, 3 low-fat dairy portions, 3 starch portions, 2-3 lean protein portions.
Weekly aim: to include 2 portions of fish (one oily), some nuts, seeds, beans and pulses.0 -
Only realised today that F*rm F*ods sell big bags of frozen leeks for £1 :j Bargain-tastic - I love leeks but really object to paying for the 'wastage' of whole ones or the over-inflated prices for trimmed ones. Shall so be keeping a stock of these in the freezer!

I made an orange drizzle cake at the weekend....having zested and juiced the orange OH then suggested that I could have also added the flesh to the cake for more flavour. This time it was composted but I know for next time:D

Apart from the fact its almost a £1 a box (and a box is per person!), I personally think they taste vile. Instead and this has fooled a lot of people I cook macaroni pasta as normal (I will use quarter of a veg stock cube in it whilst cooking to give it some flavour), drain it, put it back in the pot, add a splash of milk (not a lot needed) and use Value cheese slices torn up and thrown in and I stir over a low heat until it melts.
I find one cheese slice is enough for a small portion per person or if its dinner portions between four people I'll use about 6 slices mixed in. Sounds mad but it tastes great. The Value cheese slices are about 50p for ten slices. So cost roughly for 4 people for dinner is (Aldi/Lidl macaroni per pack is 79p), less than a £1.
Will definitely be trying this recipe, thank you!! :T0 -
Picked this tip from "How Clean is Your House"
Save the peel after eating a banana and use it to polish up leaves of plants...works a treat and they remain shiny for ages. I do this all the time and my house plants look fab; they sometimes get mistaken for FAKES!0 -
I have 2 white face clothes, one for cleanser, one for toner, they exfoliate as they go along so no need for that anymore. Give a good rinse out in the sink with some soap and hang up to dry ready for the next day.
My 99p shop does 8 packs of face clothes in various colours, I have colour coded them, white for me, orange for OH, pink for the girl, blue for the boy and a sort of creamy/beige colour have been made in to baby wipes.
Face clothes are so underrated and have a million uses.0 -
I'm another fan of face flannels. They're much greener (and cheaper) than disposable wipes. I use them with the OCM (oil cleansing method). You need them to be really clean so you don't get spots. I only ever use the washing machine when it's full so I wait till I've a load of them and towels and do them (soapnuts with a scoop of washing soda gets the oil out fine) - that meant I was running out of flannels so I cut up an ancient towel that was ripped and tatty looking. Now I have tonnes!Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

I found a tip and thought I'd share
If you like making jams then don't throw away any left over lemon 'shells' (you know, once you've squeezed them and zested them). Apparently if you boil the left overlemon with just enough water to cover them you make your own pectin! Only keeps for a week in the fridge.Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck

If you want an ice cream while on holiday and are near a town, rather than paying the extortionate prices charged by ice cream vans etc, try popping into Iceland or a supermarket. My family all wanted a Cornetto, so we bought a 6 pack of Iceland's own version for £1. There's only 3 of us in the family so we ate 3 and then I wandered off and randomly gave 3 away to passers-by. They were a bit surprised (but grateful once I'd explained what I was doing and why) and although my family was slightly embarrassed we saved around £3.50 because the Cornettos were about £1.50 from the ice cream man.
Also, to save electricity in the summer when going to bed I give my son a "cold water bottle". That is a hot water bottle which I fill with cold water and pop in the freezer for 30 - 60 mins before he goes to bed. It's just nice and chilled by then (not frozen). I then wrap it in a pillow case and he 'cuddles' it to keep cool. Saves having the fan on for long periods of time. Works a treat.0 -
My face flannel tip is this. I fold the damp flannel into a little pad, make a dent in it with my thumb, then shake a bit of bicarb of soda into the dent (you don't need much). Rub over freshly showered or washed armpit. Reshake bicarb and repeat on other side, then use the cloth to wipe round the washbasin. Wash out and hang to dry - or throw in next machine wash.
Result: - effectively deodorised armpits at a frugal price, and a nice clean washbasin.
Have been doing this for the past 15 years or so and saved LOADSAMONEY on deodorant.Keeping two cats and myself on a small budget, and enjoying life while we're at it!0
