We have a soap dispenser by the sink, which everyone thinks has special, nicely scented soap in it. Little do they know the shampoo that everyone hated and made their hair feel funny has a new home! Shampoo washes hands just as well as liquid soap!
    :)

I do this. My hubby loves the almond creamy handwash I get. it's a cheapy bath foam. He also really likes another scent that I got once…that was the shampoo my daughter didn't like!:)
PAYDBX 2016 #55 100% paid! :j Officially bad debt free...don't count my mortgage.

    I have a better one :D

Press a beer bottle cap right into the new bar, and make sure that the soap rests on that in the dish. The cap doesn't affect the feel of the soap in the hand but it dries out very quickly and lasts SO much longer.

Wow! This is brilliant. It reminds me of the Imperial Leather soap bar. As a child I used to put it stamp side up, until my grandma told me, that the stamp side goes down, so it doesn't get wet.:T:T:T

    Hi Good Advice

Really impressed with your ideas...just wish to pick your brains on a few of them.

Is the OWL gadget really good / accurate / worth the cost to buy it?
Where can you get smaller or one-cup kettles?
Where is the best place to find gas / eletricity tariffs? £76.00 DD for both your gas and eletricity is amazing!:T

    Thanks in advance. :)

I use the rinsing water, when washing up by hand, to wipe down counter and cooker, and finally mop up kitchen area of floor.

I'm home alone best part of the day, and to save boiling the kettle for coffee loads of times, I bought a 1.9 litre thermal jug (like the ones seen in meeting rooms). It keeps water hot for about 12+ hours for tea and coffee. Better than the new "Thermal Kettles", cheaper and better volume. I used to use a large capacity thermos flask, which is good also, but the thermal jug just works better for me.

In the winter months, I simply put Le Crueset kettle on Multifuel stove.

I pay £55 a month on my water meter so I save every drop I can:D

Like others, I'm stunned! Admittedly there's only me and muttley but my metered water bill is £13 a month. How do you manage to use £55 worth a month?

We have a water meter and pay £24 a month but there are 4 of us and the bath/shower is run everyday, the washer is always on, £55 seems really excessive.

Sorry everyone, not sure how to do multiple quotes......

Yes, checked the bill and it's definitely £55 a month, I have often wondered why it is so much but just thought it was about the 'right' price for a family of 4 people.

I wonder if the £55 is a combined water and sewerage bill? My water bill comes from a different company to the sewerage bill, although the latter is based on the former, and so I get a separate bill for sewerage.

Even so, £55 a month still seems very high. If it can't be explained, it may be worth investigating whether there's a leak somewhere on the system. Or a constantly dripping tap. Or a loo cistern where the ball !!!!* needs adjusting/replacing.

Pipes under concrete floors can rupture quite easily - I had one go, under my kitchen floor, and the only reason I was aware of it was because it was a hot water pipe, and the floor suddenly became warm!! It was a big leak, too! If it had been a cold pipe, I wouldn't have known until I got a huge bill!

You could check for a leak by turning EVERYTHING off, including heating/hot water pump etc. and monitoring the meter over, say a half hour period.

If, despite everything being off, the meter reading goes up, then there is a leak.

Important to ensure everything is off, and that no-one uses the loo or makes a cup of tea while you're monitoring!

    Don't forget outside taps.

I am actually ashamed to say I have no idea where my external meter is :o

I will ring Anglian Water when they open at 8am and have a chat with them as according to their site, the average use per person, per day is 145 litres? And we use 274 for the whole family so it seems we aren't excessive users.

The bill does include the sewage charge.

The meter is usually on the pavement very close to where the property boundary starts. If you know which side of the house your mains water pipe comes in, that's the side the meter will be on.

Look for a small, dark grey metal cover inset into the pavement. You can prise the cover up and then you'll see the meter underneath.
