Rather than buying expensive eye make up remover use a cotton bud dipped into a drop of olive oil this will happily break down even waterproof mascara.

I keep a small, plastic screw-top tub of olive oil in the bathroom cabinet for just this purpose. Having been asked on a couple of occasions what it is I'd recommend you keep it in a solid coloured jar - it looks suspiciously like a 'sample' you might be taking to the doctors! On the other hand the clear jar does deter from anyone opening it to investigate the contents :rotfl:
Rather than buying cotton buds I use one folded sheet of loo roll per eye, it works perfectly and helps the budget. A bonus is the olive oil makes eye lashes healthy and silky, and it helps to keep 'laugh lines' ;) at bay

I cleaned out a small pump-action container of serum when it was finished, and put the olive oil in there. It keeps its clean and is very convinient in that it dispenses just the right amount into my palm, which I then massage into my face and wipe off with a hot flannel.
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

This might seem very obvious but use up what you have first.....But be ingenious about it (if you're not using it for a certain reason)!
    - if you have shampoo you don't like (or doesn't suit your hair), use it as shower gel, bubble bath, handwash or use it to handwash delicate items.
    - shower/bath gel, use it to clean the sink or bath.
    - body lotion, use it instead of shaving foam.

I use hand cream or body lotion on my hands first and let it soak in before I put my face cream on. It means I don't lose some of my face cream as it sinks into the skin on my hands.

If you're drying long hair you can cut your drying time by running a microfiber cloth over your hair it'll absorb the water quicker than normal towels.

Use a net curtain instead of paying for a jelly bag when making preserves.

  • Another good use for unloved body lotions or creams is as leather conditioner or cleaner.
I've used up toiletries where there wasn't enough left to donate the bottle to a refuge, but where there was too much to throw out, in this way.

Ham (or other meat) trimmings are a could way to have a cheap roast dinner. Aldi's do ham and smoked ham trimmings for £1.75 for 450g. Add potatoes, veg, stuffing and gravy (value or basics where possible). If you don't have an Aldi's locally then ask at the deli counter for trimmings. It might be mixed but definitely cheaper than a joint of meat or pre-packed items. I've managed to put together a roast for Christmas eve (just the way we do things) for £5.45. Ham trimmings, potatoes, carrots, brussel sprouts, gravy (value), stuffing (value), Christmas pudding (65p for basics in aldi), custard (value). That will feed the 3 of us (with extra for SS).

Having to be on a strict budget means that I have been adding up the shopping on my phone as I go, which is great as I know what to expect, if it gets too much I can always out something back/prioritise and its amazing how many times I end up in customer services coz the price on the label does not match the one on my receipt!

    A QUESTION:

Re-using bath water? We already share a bathful between the 3 of us but was told about saving it and using it to flush the toilet with. A friend said they have saved half their bill from doing this as they are also not paying as much sewerage. I like the idea of it but usure of the real benefit and its also a very messy job, water seems to end up all over toilet and floor lol!
