I think what you're doing unixgirluk is very clever and resourceful also. I am relatively new to money saving and have been trying to bring my shopping bills down considerably, which I'm having difficulty with. I was doing pretty well and managed to save quite a bit one month then I joined a slimming club and found that losing weight costs quite a lot but now that I'm well into the swing of things (and 2 1/2 stone lighter) I am back trying to cut back again and back on moneysaving for inspiration. I am also starting to think about Christmas to try and spread the cost so I really liked the magazine idea. Any more tips from you would be greatly received! :D

I decided that as I wanted to lose weight my local Drs surgery has a nurse there who will happily weigh you weekly, and then fortnightly and give you lots of support and encouragement to jhelp you lose weight I am now going fortnightly and it costs me nothing. She is very nice and I have lots of diet sheets and booklets from her.Not only is it money saving but she is keeping an eye on how I'm doing and is pleased that my BMI is reducing and by eating healthily, with support will keep you out of Drs waiting rooms for all sorts of ailments.

My eldest DD went to a group that cost her £5.00 a week and lose very little yet I have over the past couple of months since I came back from my holidays in August have dropped over a stone without too much hardship. She prefers you to lose around a pound a week as she says it will stay off better that way Works for me at least and I am very happy with all of her help.:j

Little things we might not usually think of -
When you get in the car put your seat belt on, adjust seat, mirrors etc if you need to, before you turn the engine on. By doing it last every time it will save you a tiny drop of petrol, which all adds up to an extra litre every now and then

I always turn the kettle off as soon as it boils. It will go on boiling for quite a few seconds, saving you a little bit of money every time.

Dye. Navy always seem to fade quicker than most colours so I bought a dye for £5.99p and put it in the wm with 2 pairs of trousers, 2 teeshirts and a shirt. There was nothing wrong with any of them except fading, but it would have cost almost £50 to replace them.

On the dye front - when washing jeans or a heavily coloured item turn them inside out. Also for brightly coloured items I dyelock my stuff, i.e. t-shirt into a sinkful of tepid water with about a tbsp of salt in it (dissolved before putting your item in). Let it steep for about 30 minutes. This should stop dye coming out so quickly!
CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J
  • Does anyone know how many threads there are for sneaky ways to save money?. I would appreciate if anyone can put the links to them here for me as I fancy having a marathon read of them. Thanks in advance.

If you look in the first post you will find a link to the previous thread on the same topic.

I'll add your post to that one later.

  • I thought you meant clothing! I've recently turned an old skirt into an apron, if anyone's interested:)
  • My sneaky water-saving tip if you're on a meter and have a shower - get a clean plastic bucket & old plastic jug, and when you're waiting for the water to get hot, either put the shower head in the bucket or if it's a mixer tap save the water running from the tap before it gets hot (do this nekkid so you can get in the shower asap!)

I use this water for rinsing the bath, cleaning the sink & rest of the bathroom, watering plants. It's about 5 litres a day for one person I find so well worth doing!
  • Metered?
    1. Put plug in bath.
    2. Switch on shower or tap and wet body and flannel - switch off!
    3. Lather up.
    4. Switch on shower and rinse fast. Switch off shower.
    5. Use collected water for what you can, then keep any that's left in a couple of buckets for later use.

I do this and use it for watering my shrubs in my garden Its suprising how much water would be actually just running away down the drain otherwise and I am paying for it
I have an old 10 litre bucket which once held wallpaper paste and the handle is quite strong.Luckily my bathroom is on the ground floor fairly near to my back door so I don't have to carry it far. When I had my new walk-in shower fitted earlier this year the plumber also fitted the latest water saving WC and a tiny wash hand basin so none of the precious water gets wasted.I also only wash up the dishes once a day last thing at night and use my washing machine perhaps once a week and then only if its almost full.I have cut my water bils down from almost £30.00 per month to £16.70 just by being more sparing with the water.Small savings but worth it.

Which just goes to prove you can teach an old dog new tricks - thanks for the tips :)

I find I prefer to turn off shower soap over body then rinse.
Do I need it or just want it.
