Why would you want to give your new baby your ex's surname..? And how would your current partner feel about that? Lol. Or is he not the father?

I wouldn't.. but I could if I did want to.

The only reason my mother remarried was so my sister did not have her exH's surname

I don't care what OH thinks about it.. I wouldn't do it to my baby.. it would be mean!

You misuderstand, I was implying that your current partner (I'm assuming he's the father of your new baby) might not be too impressed if you decided to give the baby your ex's surname! Lol.
  • Yes you can use the same surname once divorced. I am currently going through divorce and have asked to keep his surname because my son has his surname and so will the baby. So I see it as easier for the children. But on forms I always put my maiden name where asked etc.
  • Also may I add that the baby on the way is the ex's which is why he will get the same surname as DS lol. If it was with a different bloke it would of had the fathers surname iygwim?

    My husband's practice wife

Everyone's circumstances are different, which I appreciate, but I can't tell you how offensive I found this phrase. I had years of financial and emotional stress after my husband ran off with an ex friend, and continued to raise 3 children with very little input from him, so to be written off with a glib phras has been, as i say, surprisingly offensive. ot having a go, just stating my point btw.

As to the original post, I have kept my married name whilst I have a child under 18. Then I will change it.

I dont think I would want to be with any man who held a former wife in such contempt as to refer to her as such, after all he chose to marry her !

Not as unimpressed as my ex would be at me calling some other mans child by his name.. lol.. :p

It could be quite 'amusing' in some ways.. OH's mum did ask actually if the baby would have OH's name or my maiden name because it couldn't possibly have ex's.. so I did point out that legally yes it could but it would be incredibly confusing for the children I already have and the baby.. though I may give the baby my maiden name if OH doesn't hurry up and think of a first name!

I kept my married name for the sake of the children...which was all fine until I had a baby(and soon to be having another one) which makes for 2 different surnames in our household. My best friend has 3 surnames in her household-her first daughter has her ex husband's surname, she herself uses a double barelled name which is made up of her maiden name and her new husband's surname, and their daughter uses his surname.

Just wondering if anyone knows wether a divored woman can still use her ex husbands surname legally. The reason why is my partners ex wife is doing something illegal and its only a matter of time before she gets caught. If she is still using his surname the local paper usually prints all the court cases and its not a very common name, would be embarrassing for him.Does anyone know is she is still entitled to use her married name even though she`s divorced.

If she does get into the news, he could take out an advert in the local paper to disclaim any connection with her. I've seen ones like that a few times in our local paper.

As ar as I know, even if you are divorced you are still known as Mrs xxxxx until you change your name back to your maiden name {surname of your birth parents}.When me and my ex got divorced in 1979 I thought you automatically reverted back to your maiden name, but found out that it only changes if you do it by deed poll or in my case you remarry{30 years this year:)}Not too sure what the rules are these days though.

Our village Dr never uses his first christian name but only uses his middle name but when he signs anything it is always with his first name first. It must get very confusing at times:p
