How to stay happy on flights for adults

OK, so there's a thread for kids - what about adults who have long, boring flights?
No books, ipods, lap tops etc allowed in cabins.
Adults can be as disruptive (or more so) on planes. So how do we keep ourselves entertained and calm?

I couldn't travel without a book and some music, I hope this alert is sorted before our next holiday.
Can you imagine flying to the far east with just the in flight magazine and the menu to read!0 -

This is happening to my partner and I next Friday. 13 hours to Singapore, then 8 hours to Sydney (with an hours break in Sin). With the security measures at LHR, we're likely to face an even longer, more stressful journey.
I plan on taking advantage of the free alcohol on board and then just sleeping. Qantas have an AVOD system, which I'm hoping will be installed on the plane (you just choose what you want to watch on demand).
I can understand the reasoning about not taking liquids, it's books and magazines that I don't understand. Exploding books? Come on.
Our consolation is that we are in business class, so I plan to take advantage of the champagne and wines. We get more things on the AVOD system than others too. Would go insane if I had to watch the same thing on a loop. Suddenly the IFE system has become very important.'We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. '

Stay awake before the flight, so you are a bit tired on the flight and will just drop off to sleep, not advisable if you are driving to the airport though or other safety issue.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Will they let you take a book on from Singapore to Sydney?
I haven't seen much news but I think it's just a US/UK alert?0 -
There's an idea. Hopefully there will be enough time to find a shop and then get back on the plane. We're only there for 1hr:30 mins. I'm guessing it will be a bit better on the return trip with regards to hand luggage.'We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. We are flying to canada in next few weeks. The flights are late afternoon going and thru night coming back so I'm hoping that the kids will sleep [STRIKE]all[/STRIKE] most of the way. I just cannot get comfy enough to sleep though, drinking alcohol makes me dehydrated and I have an ear problem which means noise via headphones are not suitable so I can never watch the in-flight film.0

If this carries on... the airlines could have as well as the drinks trolley, a few books and magazines trolleys for kids and adults! Gives you something to read and give you the option of buying it if you don't finish it on the flight!! Also puzzle books, paper, pens, colouring books, etc etc. All pre-checked with security of course. Probably with BA it would be free, but Ryanair and Easyjet would charge you £3 to read a magazine and insist on having it back before the end of the flight...0

Barcode I think you'll be alright with the flights to here. Atm there doesn't seem to be any restictions in place like flights from UK to USA.
After last time I seriously thought of next time taking a sleeping pill and sleeping as much as I can. So if these rules last I probably will do that. DH just slumps there next to me snoring his head off. Some people.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.

You can buy books and magazines once you are through security. This from the Manchester Airport website :-
"Once past security, everyone can shop normally and take their purchases on board EXCEPT for passengers travelling to the USA. On US flights no liquids can be taken on board - this applies to perfumes, alcohol, drinks and anything with liquid content."What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0
