I think this is being done to death, but I am not missing this point. If tyres are marked as advisory - one with a nail in - and she is using the car reguarly, and she cannot afford to get the tyres replaced, they will become illegal. That's not my opinion, it's a fact. I never once said her car was illegal now, I said that it will be if she does not fix the faults, and this she states she cannot do due to lack of funds.

Then we'll agree to disagree. All I can say is I've driven 1.5m miles and never missed an MOT and in that time have had no fails and only one advisory. That's not some kind of weird boast, that's saying that proper maintenance of a car means that I don't suddenly find myself unexpectedly having to fork out money I don't have.

I must admit that my cars are serviced regularly and are maintained properly but I do find that things go wrong with them, and most of the time it's due to wear and tear. You must have been very lucky or must drive newer cars than me :)

In that case, get it into a proper garage (not a fast fit centre) and get them to give the car a look over.

Kwik-fit are notorious for trying to generate themselves work....

I've just had my 03 Punto in for its MOT and (interim) service.
It failed! The coil springs on the front needed replacing which set me back £88 and got it passed on a re-test. *But* it has a lot of advisories too - two tyres worn close to legal limit, one tyre cracked at edge and has nail in it, oil leak, exhaust gases leaking from exhaust pipe (slightly corroded), new shock absorbers advised, and since they put in the new coils there is a 'popping' noise from the front right wheel when I turn right, which apparantly means I need a new damper too..?
I've already emptied my savings today to get it through MOT and service and the essential work. What would you say is the most urgent of the advisories to get done? I can't afford to get them all done at once, and am looking at a credit union loan (gulp, on a DMP too!!) to be able to afford it all.
I got it in 2006 (second hand, only 15000 miles when I got it) and I've already had a new battery, three (?) new tyres, exhuast pipe fixed (rusted through completely) and front brake discs and pads replaced. Argh! Looking to get rid of it next year when finance is up and can't wait to see the back of it!

The tyre with the crack and nail in it 1st and foremost, then the other 2 tyres(legal limit is 1.6mm across 3/4 of the tread with no large bald areas-there are tread depth markers between the tread to show how close to the limit you are).
Next the dampers as they can cause damgerous and unpredictable handling.Maybe you can get the exhaust welded, its a cheap fix.
Unless you ar eleaving a slick behind you when you dirve then that can maybe wait and keep topping it up when necessary.

Thanks everyone. After kwik fit fixed the coils I noticed a new 'popping' sound coming from the front right wheel every time I turn the steering. The Kwik Fit time told me this was because of the damage caused when the coil snapped and why I needed new shocks.
I called the AA out to check as I was concerned by how much noise it was making on the drive home, funny the noise wasn't there before?
There is nothing whatsoever wrong with the shocks, other than normal wear and tear. The noise was caused by the spring not being put in properly to the cup and moving when the wheel turned.
There is no oil patches under the car, or left on my drive, and never has been.
I'm getting the coil fixed tomorrow (and should be free of charge since the fault is theirs) and new tyres then too, since my dad has kindly offered to help out. He has also recommended I don't bother with Kwik Fit again, and I don't intend to.
I don't expect the car to be worth much when I sell it; it had bumps when I got it, more since, and bears the scars of having been broken into twice. It's essential for me to get to work, otherwise I wouldn't have it (I enjoy walking, but the 26 mile round trip to and from work is beyond my limits!).
Proud to be dealing with my debts! :T

26 Miles? Pah! You could do that on a pushbike :rotfl:

Well at least it sounds like you've got a handle on things :D
