Mot fail and advisories

And I know I sound like a parrot, but if you'd maintained the car properly you would be coming out of this hundreds, probably thousands, of pounds better off than you are now.
She's just spent £88 pounds on an MOT.
She's also just had her car serviced.
She also needs tyres, and a shocker.
Where are the thousands of pounds to be saved here?
Advisories are subjective opinions on items that are not serious enough to fail an MOT, or, in the case of the oil leak, irrelevant to the MOT.
If we all ran away and got every advisory dealt with, there would be a lot of unneccessary work getting dome IMHO.
You dont own a garage do you? :rotfl:
In my opinion your post is misleading at best, at at worst complete nonsense. :rotfl:0 -
Thanks Mollycat, :-)
My dad has very kindly offered to help with the costs until I am financially better off again; at which point all these things will get dealt with.
I suspect the shocks/coils have taken a heavy toll over winter (and the horrendous speedbumps which seem to be *everywhere*) but otherwise I do my best to maintain the car.
Artbaron, if I'd maintained the car as you say properly I woudn't have saved any money - it would just be spent over a longer period of time, because these things would still need doing, though they certainly don't and won't cost thousands of pounds.Proud to be dealing with my debts! :TLightbulb moment June 2008

From not maintaining the car properly? Is this tricky for you to comprehend, that poor car maintenance results in serious money wastage? Or that unattended problems on vehicles normally turn into bigger, more expensive problems? She also needs tyres, and a shocker.
And the rest. Try reading the post, maybe?Advisories are subjective opinions on items that are not serious enough to fail an MOT, or, in the case of the oil leak, irrelevant to the MOT.

Unneccessay like having a legal exhaust? Or legal tyres? Or tyres without nails in? Or functioning suspension? Or an engine with oil in?
You sound like someone I used to know, a real know-it-all. He once had an oil leak identified on an MOT - I had a look and told him he needed to get it fixed, as it was spraying near his cam belt. Nah, it's only an advisory, he said. Yeah, one which cost him £2.5K the very next week when the belt slipped.0 -

Come back and let us know how much you sell it for, then you can say that. The idea that you can fail to maintain your car and not lose money is absurd in the extreme.0 -
Ok the granddad having a slow puncture for 6 years has got me how much time has he wasted pumping it up for a £10-15 repair? Not a good example.Google gives you answers use it.........0

Hi Kay
I'm sorry that you seem to be getting a lot of negativity here. Maybe some of its Justified, maybe it isn't. I'm not going to pass judgement - we all have to start and learn somewhere.
In terms of priority (which was your original question wasn't it!?)
Get your tyres sorted out (and get the tracking done at the same time) even the notorious kwak fut should be able to do this for you. (this is for legal reasons, if you get stopped or have an accident with illegal tyres you are entering a world of hurt) BTW, look at the side of your tyre it will say something like 185/65/15 - this is the tyre size - there will also be a letter, which is a speed rating - punch these details into www.blackcircles.co.uk and you may find a better deal on your tyres. (DO NOT TRY AND SCRIMP BY USING A LOWER SPEED RATING)
Next on the list would have to be the shock absorber / damper - this takes a lot of the energy out of the potholes and speedbumps that you seem to be encountering. A speedy replacement will ensure less stress on the car and a longer life.
In terms of the exhaust, could be a very simple cheap fix or it could be a whole new system. Did the MOT guy show you where the leak was? If its only small a smear of Exhaust Paste could be all thats needed - or an exhaust bandage - quick, easy and I'm sure that your dad could do it if you dont feel up to it.
Now, the oil leak - do you know where the leak is? it might take a little bit of investigating to sort it out - so maybe a job for a backstreet garage (keeping costs down) but keep an eye on your oil level and have a gallon can by the front door so you can top it up as and when.
BTW, tyre depth gauges can be picked up very cheaply. My local pound shop had a load in not so long ago. Tyre pressure - when you fill up use the garages air pump most sainsburys garages have them for free and you can enter the PSI required into the digital display and let it do the work
If you need any help feel free to give me a shout and I'll do what I can.Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -
Advisory means ignore til the next MOT I've had things advised at one MOT then not even mentioned a year later at the next one. Obviously keep an eye on the tyres, swap the one with the nail for the spare until you can get a new one unless you got a space saver.Nothing to see here, move along.0

The coil springs on the front needed replacing which set me back £88 and got it passed on a re-test
Congrats*But* it has a lot of advisories too - two tyres worn close to legal limit,
How close is close? Close is a very opinionated word, remember there is only mm between illegal, legal & new.one tyre cracked at edge and has nail in it
If true, then that's a fail.oil leak
Not a test item.exhaust gases leaking from exhaust pipe (slightly corroded)
&new shock absorbers advised, and since they put in the new coils there is a 'popping' noise from the front right wheel when I turn right, which apparantly means I need a new damper too..?
Is this a tyre, exhaust, suspension type place?0 -
