Mot fail and advisories

This was in kwik-fit.
So every fail and all but one of the advisory items are things that they repair, strange that.
Did they offer to tackle the oil leak? Probably suggest it needs an oil change.
I'd check the tyre for a nail and if it's there have the puncture repaired.
I think that some people perhaps owe you an apology.0 -
Coveredinbees!!!! wrote: »Advisory means ignore til the next MOT I've had things advised at one MOT then not even mentioned a year later at the next one. Obviously keep an eye on the tyres, swap the one with the nail for the spare until you can get a new one unless you got a space saver.
I had an advisory disappear in a week between tests without being attended to :rotfl:0 -
Never use Kwik Fit for MoT's. Use a local independant garage.
MoT's are a licence for Kwik Fit to print money as they just happen to be in business to sell Tyres, Exhausts, shockers etc.
However, as catflea says, tyres and shockers are you priority. Apply some gun gum to the exhaust.Mortgage free

"Close to the limit" is, by definition, on over the limit and therefore still legal.
That said, if they really are that close, then your grip will be diminished and it will take longer to stop - so changing them sooner rather than later would be wise.
A tyre with a nail in should be checked professionally - again sooner rather than later. It may need a relatively inexpensive repair but if it is left and goes down, it could cause damage to the structure of the tyre forcing replacement - or worse it could blow out at high speed.
I agree that it makes sense to sort out the tracking too. If that is out, it will both reduce the life of the tyres and increase fuel consumption - it means they are, to a greater or lesser extent, being pushed sideways and wear away like a rubber on a piece of paper.
See if you can find a local evening class on basic car maintenance. You don't want something that will show you how to take the engine apart but at least if you know how to check and top up fluids, tyre pressure and so on, you will be more confident - and it will be a good investment.0 -

Emmmmmmmm
It passed on the tyres and so were legal at time of test.
OP if it was me I would be looking at get the shocks done they could be the reason you are going through tyres (in conjunction with the springs)0 -
To check the stuff they 'say' needs doing (apart from the nail - unless you can't find it) take it to a small independent long-standing local garage and just ask them what it might need for an MOT.
Or buy a tread depth gauge - less than a fiver - and google legal tread depth requirements.
Tyres - mytyres.com is also good, or use Kwikfits online - they often do print off a voucher deals the drive-in-off-the-street customer misses out on.
Shocks - either they leak and are an MOT fail, or they don't leak full stop, as far as I'm aware.
Same goes for the exhaust - I'm not a mechanic, but surely exhaust gases leaking out is a fail, not an advisory?
Clicking on full lock - that could be shock absorber top mounts, a bush, or the kwikfit fitters not doing their job properly - get it checked out.
Bet you don't go to kwikfit againunless you already know you need a tyre or three

I too have got advisories on my MOT, on my first car which I've only just bought, but I think personally that you should get it checked out by a local 'small' garage that may not even charge you for checking, especially if you tell them that the original advisories were from Kwik Fit.
I certainly don't think it makes you irresponsible for coming on here for advice, I actually think the opposite.0 -
as already said, mots at kwik fit is a bad idea.
anyway.
1. the pinging might be the new springs settling into the cups, but maybe ask a second opinion maybe they have accidentally fitted punto sporting springs which are slightly shorter so too short for the shocks
2. where is the leak? most puntos weep from the rocker cover when they get a bit older. if it isnt dripping I would just steam clean it or brush in degreaser every 6 months or so. and check the level every week like everyone is supposed to.
3. exhaust leak. gungum, and if its on a pipe, flange, or round silencer they do tailored repair patches that in my experience last for years if done properly.
4. tyres. self explanatory, chane them if they are gubbed. good thing about the punto is lots of boy racers fit big silly alloys, then sell their perfectly decntly servicable steelys with ok tyres on them or small alloys on fiat forums, ebay or gumtree etc, so go find a bargain.0
