ccleaner.exe <enter>
you should then notice that it then starts the application without needing explorer.
if it crashes then you need to let us know what error message it comes up with.
Hi Bob, thanks for your suggesion. I managed to access the command prompt via Task Manager and ran the file Ccleanersetup230.exe from the C: drive (I had already copied it over last night). It got halfway through installation and then came up with the message 'CCleaner Installer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for any inconvenience.'0 -
if you run explorer from the cmd prompt, does it crash? Crashes with an error message? CCleaner fell over, what happened?
If exe's are working ok, can you run regedit or rstrui from the command prompt?
Tried running explorer from the command prompt and it gave me the usual message: Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'
I can run regedit from the command prompt.
I tried running rstrui from the command prompt and it gave me this message: 'rstrui' is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I can't run it from Task Manager either, it says: Windows cannot find 'rstrui'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.0 -
A few further thoughts:
The laptop boots up into Windows reasonably quickly and the wireless adapter etc all appear to be working OK.
When I first started trying to sort this laptop out, it seemed to work OK. The first thing I did was to uninstall Norton 360 as it had expired, and now I can't even open the Control Panel without Windows Explorer encountering a problem.
In Task Manager, when clicking on the Performance tab the CPU usage is next to nothing, and on the Processes tab, top of the list is expolorer.exe with 24,725 K memory usage, so that does not indicate a problem to me.
I have found an entry on the laptop's program list referring to Free !!!!!! - that may be connected to the problem?
I have been trying all these helpful suggestions in normal mode - should I be doing it in safe mode?
And as I have spent a few hours on this getting nowhere, and wasting the time of my helpful friends here on MSE, should I give up trying to repair it? I see that students can buy Windows 7 Professional for £42.95 on Software4Students so it might be better long term for the lad to do that. What do you guys think?0 -
Have you used the 'Hiren's Boot Disc' to run any of the varied scans or 'Back up' any essential info before a possible reinstall? Have you tried the 'Repair' option using the MCE 2005 disc?0

No Donnie, I thought you asked me to hold off using the Hirens Boot Disc until you had checked it out. Will try now and report back. Tried to make a MCE 2005 disc but must have done something wrong as it is not bootable. Will try Hirens first though. Luckily there is no important data on the hard disk that I need to save.

Didn't find any negative reports online. Waited to see if anyone else with a differing antivirus solution would download and report. Obviously not happened yet.
You can download it and see what your antivirus solution reports, if anything.
Try downloading MCE 2005 from the new link to see if it makes a difference, as I'm sure that one is a Bootable Disc.
MCE has Windows XP Professional under the hood. So an OEM version of XP Pro pertaining to that brand may work.0 -
cd \windows\system32\restore
rstrui
if that doesn't work
cd \
dir rstrui.exe /s
find where it is, then cd to it
or go via control panel by typing
control!!

Managed to do this part way, and then I got the old familiar message 'System Restore Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'
Tried accessing Control Panel through the command prompt and it says 'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'0 -
Use Hiren's Boot CD. Unzip and burn image to disc.
It has Malwarebytes' AntiMalware 1.44 and many other useful utilities. Should do the trick.
Info here.
Donnie - I tried to download this but the link on the download page does not seem to work?0
