if you run explorer from the cmd prompt, does it crash? Crashes with an error message? CCleaner fell over, what happened?

If exe's are working ok, can you run regedit or rstrui from the command prompt?

    A bit more info:

I can start the laptop in Safe Mode with networking but it doesn't really help.

But one bit of good news though - I can get on the internet with Safari (Internet Explorer does not work).

Use Hiren's Boot CD. Unzip and burn image to disc.

It has Malwarebytes' AntiMalware 1.44 and many other useful utilities. Should do the trick.

    Info here.

ESS is reporting an 'Unknown Boot Virus' on the disc(version 10.4) during download. Not sure if it's a false positive.
Checking version 10.3. Hold off from using the version above for the time being.

if explorer crashes when trying to browse then you may need to launch the applications from the command prompt

    using CD (change directory)

you can go to the thumb drive
    cd e:

usually changes to the thumb drive, though you may need a bit of trial and error if you dont know the drive letter
    dir

is a good way of seeing whats on the drive you change to

once you have changed to the drive and done dir you can see directories that you want to switch to, for example is you have a program ccleaner in a folder called cc, you would type
    cd cc <enter>

    dir <enter>

(look for the ccleaner executable, usually with a .exe extention)
    ccleaner.exe <enter>

you should then notice that it then starts the application without needing explorer.

if it crashes then you need to let us know what error message it comes up with.

please note the above is not accurate for launching ccleaner, merely a guide to changing directories via the command line and what to look for, you will need to think a little :)

Same problem in version 10.3. Will take a look around to see if problems are reported. Shame, as the disc should do the trick.
Maybe someone can download in order to check if their antivirus solution reports the same. Maybe it's just a False Positive report from Eset.

Hi Closed, I just tried this and I got an error message saying 'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'

And then another error message appeared straight afterwards: 'Java(TM) Update has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'

And then upon closing the error messages after sending the reports to Microsoft, I got another message saying 'DrWatson Postmortem Deb*gger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience'.
