We love Lagos, although it's a traditional Portuguese resort, it is a working town and can get lively.

If you are looking for something quieter, I would choose Praia Da Luz - It's near to Lagos and the quaint traditional Portuguese fishing villages of Burgau and Salema.

Alvor and Carvoeiro are also lovely resorts.

The problem is they are all great destinations.

Do you need a beach? Oporto is a fabulous place - if you stay in the old town on the waterfront, which is a UNESCO world heritage site, there is the Duoro river, to cruise, port to taste, culture and music and history and architecture and parks and lots of excellent restaurants. The locals are charming - reserved and polite and there is no need to speak Portuguese as they are all very helpful. Plus there are absolutely no groups of rowdy brits. If you like the beach there is a resort called Foz about 15 minutes up the river, where it meets the atlantic and that has rocks and beaches and cafes too. It is never too hot because of theprevailing winds. Only 15 minutes from the airport where Easyjet flies to and that is a nice modern airy building as well.

  • Burgau and Salema is ideal for access to a town (Lagos) beaches, restaurants and you also have great access to the surfing beaches of the Atlantic coast. You will also find better value for money eating out
