Portugal which resort?

  • Alvor is lovely, but if you're willing to travel a bit further out i'd recommend a little fishing village called burgau...1hr from the airport, so you'd need a car but a great base to get out exploring along the coast. It's the next village on from Praia De Luz, so pharmacies and proper shops are 5 mins drive away if you need them, but in Burgau itself it's very olde world...women still wearing black mourning their husbands from 20 years ago, old fishermen playing chess etc...lots of small, family run restaurants and bars so plenty of choice if you want to eat out every night for a week.

cobbled streets and a bit hilly, but a very authentic portugeuse village. Have been for the last 4 years and love it!

Stayed in Vau three years ago, really small and quiet. There's five restaurants and no pubs as such just bar areas in the restaurants - not sure if this is too quiet? It's a 10-15 minute walk from Praia da Rocha which is a big touristy resort, Alvor's about a 20 minute walk in the other direction ( taxis either way to either resort around 3 euro ). The beach in Vau is really nice ( the wife loves the beach there!) any questions re accommodation etc ask away :)

I went to Burgau 25 years ago and there was a fair bit of development even then, with lots of buiilding outside the old village. The centre was pretty enough but hardly as undeveloped as you've described. Probably still nicer than most of the Algarve though.

Terracos do vau was the name of the accommodation (just clicked the spam button by mistake-not totally awake yet!-sorry if that affects anyone!)

We stayed in Terracos when we stayed in Vau! Two blocks of low rise appartments, pool and small kids pool with small bar/cafe area. All the staff were really nice and was a five minute walk to the beach at most.

Also in Vau - 'Coral do Vau' are really nice apartments, directly across from beach and would advise you look at these.

In Alvor - Dunas do Alvor - fantastic family apartments, great location.

Any questions just ask or PM me :)

Tavira is a lovely old town with loads of old churches and a village center with fantastic fish restaurants. Its only about 45 minutes from Faro aiport heading towards hte Spanish border but is worlds apart from the built up Algarve resorts. There is a tidal river that runs through the town and there are regular ferries to Isla La Travira a sand bar with a couple of bars and stunning miles of clean unspoilt sand.

Bica restaurant regularly features in all the best guides as a great place to eat and fantastic value. The old fish market has beeen converted into a lovely cafe
