Congratulations EA! You all look lovely. Hope you have a good evening.

The past few days have been a bit on/off with feeding and sleeping. We've started doing a bed/bathtime routine to try and relax Holly in the hope that she'll go to sleep in her moses basket. The first night it worked well- she stayed in the basket until about 2am before coming in our bed but then last night she didn't settle from 7pm onwards so DH ended up on the floor and she was in bed with me all night where she slept like an angel only waking me up for feeds twice.

This morning we had a first feed at 7am and then she was howling constantly until midday. She was making her hungry faces and fists, so I was feeding on and off for almost 5 hours. It was only when I gave her a bottle of expressed milk at midday that she seemed satisfied, so I'm wondering if she's actually feeding properly. She's defo latched on properly but she seems to be quite lazy with her sucking compared with when she's taking it from the bottle. So I've decided to not only have some expressed on standby but also some formula feeds ready to go in case she doesn't seem satisfied and I've run out of expressed (only managing to get about 2oz max in a sitting). Does this sound alright?

On a cheerier note, Holly has now met all her grandparents. My Dad and Stepmum drove up from Bristol for a few hours today and after Holly had finished her howling we went out for lunch and I had a delish stilton ploughmans. I've been craving stilton since I got pregnant so was a real treat!

Hope everyone's having a good weekend!

If you want to do more co-sleeping we manage in a double bed but we have a bedside cot so a little bit extra room and once we got used to it we sleep fine.

Holly could be going through a growth spurt which will cause the continuous feeding, they have a few during the first couple of months and you just end up feeding all day long but it does only last a few days then your supply increases and the feeds go back to normal. For this reason I think it is better not to use formula so that your supply increases to match LO's needs. It could be that she seems to suck harder on the bottle because it is harder for her to get the milk out? I know it can be a struggle at times, I used to have horrid evenings when Erin was tanking up before bed and she was feeding continuously and was generally unsettled but we persevered with breast only and eventually it sorted its self out. Don't want to put you off formula if you think that is best but just a word of caution that you could effect your supply. Also you will know if Holly is getting enough milk if her weight gain is ok and she has plenty of wet nappies.

Question: Because I'm doing baby led weaning and Erin isn't eating much will she be low on iron and if so what can I do about it?

Aless it's good to see you still have your sense of humour at 2am :)

Had a lovely time at baby shower yesterday. Friend is having a section on 14th, I'm very excited! Was supposed to be keeping the date a secret but her mum can't hold her own water and told loads of people

I'm not entirely sure... Formula manufacturers would have you believe there's not enough iron in breastmilk so that you buy the fortified follow on milk... It's true that there's lower levels in bm but it's in a form that is easily absorbed so I would think while you're still breastfeeding then she'll be getting enough...

I've never substituted either of the girls diets... They seem healthy enough to me...

Oh, and 20 minutes before the end of his shift on Friday night hubby found out he no longer has a job there :( Only kind of mentioned in a passing conversation too, doesn't seem like they were even going to tell him

    B astards.

He still has his Saturday night and Monday but is now looking for a new Friday. Just not what we need.

My half-recollection is that at birth there is a sort of iron repository in the baby, which sloooowly runs down over many months? Isn't that right? So iron-deficiency is only likely when they're quite old (but what quite old means I don't recall at all...). Did I make that up?

Oh SJ, that's awful! How can they let him go without giving him a proper notice period?!

    Bruno.... That's mostly true too...
