MSE Parents Club Part 12

It seems to be that IRL people say that children get very expensive as they grow up. How much does everyone feel this HAS to be the case?
My DD is 12 and DS1 is 10. I know some of her friends parents will spend £500 on each child at Xmas/ birthdays - that's just ridiculous! Ours get about £75. OSMetimes more (eg they have DS lites) but not often. They don't get pocket money from us as such - they get money into their bank accounts. They do get monthly pm from my mum, weekly from DHs mum and occasional from DH's gran. They save this and buy stuff they want (DS games, books etc)
DD has my old laptop in her bedroom and one of my mum's old mobile phones. She has PAYG and I have only put £25 on there in a year - she's pretty good. Laptop is essential for secondary school.
I'd agree with the school costs - and they're worse when at secondary. The uniform (winter and summer version) (inc compulsory crested blazer), dance kit, summer sports kit, winter sports kit, swimming kit, then the trips etc. Ours also would like each parent to pay min £20/ mth by standing order towards new school sports hall - they phone you up to see why not if you don't send the form back:eek:
Clothes wise DD is fine. SHe gets some Debenhams clothes from my friend's daughter. I buy some from Debenhams, NExt, Matalan, Tesco, Sainsbury - atm it's ok. I suspect it will change:cool:
