How to keep the kids happy on flights - now almost everything is banned.

Babies and toddlers, I think I would try to tire them out in the hope that they might sleep on the plane. Other than that, the usual songs which involve actions - Incy Wincy Spider etc - might pass 10 minutes or so!
For older children, we used to play at 'Alphabets'. Somebody picks a subject, cars for instance, then everybody takes a turn naming a car starting with A. When nobody can come up with any more, move to B etc. It's actually surprising the amount of time you can pass with this. The list of subjects in endless.
Or you could tear up pages of the inflight magazine and make a jigsaw..........0 -
Although this is somewhat of a minor consideration given the importance of safety/security inflight, insurance premiums for travel now I can see escalating quite significantly, as you have to check EVERYTHING into the hold. Maybe I'm wrong, just a thought.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.” - Oscar Wilde0

Inappropriate Calpol use could be considered to be child abuse - it's paracetomol and is meant for when they're poorly, not noisy!!! Mine only got Calpol when they asked for it, once they could talk - they soon realise what makes them feel better.
Maybe you could teach them to ask for it before a flight???0 -
How about hand games like paper, scissors, stone.
Rhyme games like I went to the shop and bought *something begnning with A* then *B* etc.
Sing nursery rhymes and action songs with actions you can do in a limited space!
Invent games after the inflight refreshments - see how many stirrers you can javelin throw into a cup, or how many scrunched up sugar sachet wrappers you can catapult into the cup using a spoon
Here I go again on my own....0 -
I'm pretty certain that once this has all calmed down it'll be back to normal (with the exception of fluids) in hand baggage in the next few weeks.0

What about buying a book, top trumps etc. once through security?
I haven't seen anything that says all the shops are closed in Airports once airside (unless of course I've missed it!)0 -

My kids were prescribed Phenergans Elixir when they were very young and boy, it made them really unwell. Tummy trouble big time. Not something you want to have when on a crowded plane and a miniscule toilet cubicle.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. Tbh It won't be as bad as you think flying without hand luggage, we all take far more than is necessary.
I flew longhaul from Bahrain to Birmingham via Dubai on Emirates 4 weeks ago with 4.5 and 3 year old boys and they weren't interested in the few bits I'd put in their handluggage. By the time they'd settled (on the 2nd flight), got kids headphones, cuddly toy and activity pack, eaten food, watched Ice Age 2 twice, eaten again, asked a few times 'were we there yet' and looked at the map tracker we'd landed in Birmingham, they hadn't had one wink of sleep in 14 hours, but were in good humour considering it was 3 hours past their bedtime.0 -
Just been watching Simon Calder on "Breakfast Time" and he is saying that once you pass through security you can buy stuff in the air-side shops and take it on the plane. So the likes of Dixons and W.H.Smith will be rubbing their hands with all this extra trade that will be generated for them. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0
