We don't want to have a tv hooked up to the outside world, but we would like to have one without an aerial or anything that we can use with the dvd player to watch movies occassionally. Do we need a tv licence just to own the tvv (ie would it be too hard to prove we werent using it?). Its not really the cost so much just that we don't want a tv, and it seems daft to pay for something we have no use.

If you are using the TV as described and are not watching TV as broadcast over the internet, or by other means, then you do not need a TV licence.

Thanks for the reply lucylucky. I'm just not sure how we'd convince them we don't secretly use it illegally. I didn't have a tv (or licence) as a student, and trying to convince them I just wasn't that interested was nigh on impossible!

    Just ignore them, simplest way.

They have no right of entry to your property and you can throw any correspondence from them in the bin.

My brother who's a student used a monitor with a HDMI input for watching bluray, DVD and playing games consoles. He contacted TV licensing advising of this and they asked if they could visit to confirm. He had no problem with this so agreed, they checked the setup and left satisfied.

This is factually incorrect. The TV does not have to be linked up to an aerial or even be turned on to necessitate a licence, it merely needs to be capable of receiving TV signals. Any other method would merely resulting in people using internal TV aerials and hiding them when the licensing people arrived to inspect

The only option for viewing DVDs and not requiring a licence is to purchase a computer monitor with no TV receiving capabilities.

Great plan, I look forward to seeing his name in the local papers for evasion of TV licence tax. :D

The OP has no need of a licence and is therefore not evading anything.
