Can you do this in a british shop?

Can you buy somepthing with a credit card (british credit) and then return it for a refund, they give you a refund in cash - bingo you got cash got from a credit card spend =)

And if you do this with a cashback credit card/card with any kind of incentive, you could do an infinite loop. by something for lets say £100, return it. Get a reward for spendind £100, do the same again, keep getting rewards (something like the iPOINTS credit card maybe or game where you get points)).

Most places will only refund to the card the payment was made from.

I've never got a cash refund from something that had been paid for by card. It's always been refunded back onto my card. If you don't have your card, most likely you'd just get a credit note anyway.

Could you not balance transfer to a pre-paid Visa or Mastercard? Not sure if this would work though.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Asda have done this for me on a couple of occasions. I didn't ask for it, they just went ahead and gave me the cash. Can't complain about that!

I've had overcharges in Asda and Somerfield refunded in cash when I originally paid by card. Both of these were less than £1, so you won't get very rich with this!

I've had this happen a few times, the most recent was Mothercare. I ordered £200 worth of stuff online, went via quidco (8% cashback) and paid by Amex (1% cashback). While I was waiting for it to arrive I found better items elsewhere so ended up taking it back to my local Mothercare store for a refund.

I took the delivery note and didn't try to "hide" anything but the girl at the checkout couldn't figure how to process an online return in store so just put everything through as a refund without receipt and put the money back on my visa debit card (it seems the delivery note didn't show what card I had used to pay and I couldn't remember which one I had used at the time). I never set out to get any free money but I ended up £9 up - not bad for a few minutes online and a trip to the shop!

Done it (sort of) in B&Q. Spent £13000 on a new kitchen and bathroom instore. Paid using Egg Money (so got £130 cashback). Couple of months later I cancelled because they couldn't sort out installers. They refunded by cheque from head office - so I got to keep the £130 cashback.

Someone on the forum mentioned you can do this with Oyster cards.

Tesco and ASDA have both refunded me in cash with price errors (small ones)

Most stores will not allow this. I know that banks watch for refunds onto debit cards where you never bought anything and will flag it up with the shop to look into. Small amounts tends to be accepted (bit like the shop floor limit on a credit/debit card where they will not check if you have the money in the account as it would be a waste of time)

Most shops will 'refund to tender' (aka the same way you paid) to prevent money laundering / fraud

An additional reason for this is that shops have to pay a merchant fee to the card company for all payments they take by card. If they refund back to the card then the fee is cancelled, but if the refund by other means they still have to pay the fee.
