Hi,
I am after a bit of advice with regards to my ford focus, it is a 2005 reg LX model. Yesterday it started making a really bad noise every time I accelerated and called out the recovery people who immediately said it would need towing to a garage of my choice as it was leaking fluid.
I got it towed to my local independent garage and was instantly told that the power steering pump had broken and it would need replacing. Today the garage have said that it also needs a new hose to connect the pump and two other small parts, so far the parts bill is over £400 without the labour charges adding.
Does this amount seem about right or am I being overcharged?
Thanks
Sarah

New one on EBay for £250 so is probably about right. I would source a second hand one if it was me somewhere around £40-£60.
But double check by calling a dealer's parts department.0 -
it happened to my mates old focus and same story, he needed both pump and pipe,he fitted it himself and i remember the pump and pipe did cost him a few quid to buy back then.and is a bit of a pain to fit. so your price might not be too far of the mark.
phone a few independant garages and aks for a quote....work permit granted!0 -
Thanks for the replies, I phoned another independent garage and got a rough price which was similar and tried the local ford garage who quoted around £750 for the repair!
The garage it is in were expecting to be able to repair it today but they are saying it is a nightmare trying to get the parts fitted, they tried it without replacing the hose but the fluid kept leaking.
Really crap timing and expensive repair but looks like they are not trying to rip me off.0 -
sad truth is the pipe leaks and ruins the pump (design fault)
the pipe has to be replaced as its a modified item by ford (cheeky gits avoided a recall on this one)
price wise your garage is about right0 -
I had my car repaired and the bill was broken down as follows:
Labour £120.00
Pump £178.88
Belt Kit £55.30
Switch £27.68
Pipe/Hose £86.79
Unions £29.18
Power Fluid £10.00
VAT £88.87
Total cost £596.70
Hoping that it is it for a bit with repairs!0 -

if mine goes i'll do it myself i think....work permit granted!0 -
you have to change the pipe as its a modified item
they are a bit fiddly but can be done in around 2 hours0 -
Also, on the Focus of that age its an !!!!!! of a job to do!
Ask a Ford garage to check to see if it's been done under recall or not. If its not, then that could save you a few quid!0 -
The garage spent ages trying to fit the parts, very surprised that they only charged £120 for labour costs.
I contacted a number of ford garages and even though it is a known fault they are not doing anything to help customers with repair bills, the local ford garage gave me an estimate of £750 for the repair so the local garage was considerably cheaper.0 -
they only charge the icme labour time (a little manual we use to qoute on jobs)
ford know the pipe is a problem as most cars are well out of warranty they wont admit fault0
