Yes, it says that if you password protect the stick it automatically encryps the files.
I've just logged onto the memory stick again and pressed the decrypt and open. Its listing the photos on there the same as on the hard drive, with the thumbprint missing and the file name. It looks as though it has decrypted it, but when I click on it, Microsoft photo Editor comes up with a box that says 'Can't determine type' which is what it says when I click on the ones on the hard drive.
So it looks as though they are lost on there too.

If the USB is full, then why are you even talking about recovering data from it? I considered raising the possibility of running the undelete from a partition, but I didn't want to complicate things since the OP has already indicated that there are more important things happening than just the computer issue. It seemed simpler just to use the USB, and unlikely that there is anything needing to be undeleted from the USB.

I understand why you don't want to complicate things but its likely this happened during a sync, so either PC's file drop to 0 bytes and synced to the stick or their was a problem on the stick and it sync'd to the PC,

Now as we don't know which way around this happened and it hasn't just happened

So I believe its is safer to leave the USB as is in the hope maybe able to get it form their.. as their is no harm in not changing data on the USB so why remove a possible recovery point! considering the USB has less data writes that the PC,

but in truth we don't know if the file size was 0 bytes before he even got the USB!

    ooow my bad!
What i mean is, the files on your computer may of been 0 bytes before you copied them to the USB, or their was an error on the USB that then copied them back as 0 bytes

    Sorry ma'lady :p

It says not to install it on a drive you want to recover data from, can that be done in another partition?

If you have another partition (formatted already).

The ideal in this situation is not to install anything on the c drive, but just running windows can overwrite the data area it depends on how much free space you have, and luck, but as it stands you are running out of options, as it appears something has truncated the file length or overwritten the file, if getdataback can't find it, it's probably gone.
