What should my 12 year old son wear to a christening?

  • Wearing trainers for school all day and never wearing "proper" shoes isn't good for developing feet. I'd buy school shoes for everyday use. He could wear school trousers, school shoes and a cheap, smart, short sleeved shirt. I don't think a tie is required, unless he wants to wear one.

Nothing to do with the OP, but while I believe that you shouldn;t wear jeans to a Christening, I do wear them to church! I just think a Christening is more smart than an average Sunday service. We dressed up for my DD's dedication (we dont; do Christening) and I'd have been hurt if family had come in jeans even though we usually wear tham all the time.

Have a look in one of the supermarkets, I'm sure you would be able to find a shirt, trousers and something for his feet for £20 all in.

If we had one to go to, I'd have my son in his school trousers, school shoes and I'd get him a shirt or borrow one from someone, seeing as it's just for one occasion.

I'm getting married this year and of course my son would love to wear his every day clothes, but he will be wearing a suit and that's the end of it! He is 14 by the way.

I don't think those high trainers are suitable for a christening IMO, all black trainers maybe he would get away with, but not multi coloured ones, sorry.

I'd let him wear whatever he was comfortable in, as long as it looked smart.
I've never made either of my boys wear trousers and shirts and ties apart from when my son made his First Holy Communion.
We went to a family christening in March. Both boys wore their Christmas outfits - smart dark jeans, white T-shirt and cardigan. Both wore boots.
However, if we were to go to a summer christening when the weather is warm I'd have put them in smart shorts and maybe even trainers as long as they werent scuffed and dirty!
I dont see the point in buying a shirt that will never be worn again or making them wear school trousers. In fact, their school trousers are a little worn so wouldnt look smart anyway!
As other posters have said, its the fact that you've turned up, not what you are wearing thats important.

My two nephews are being christened together, one is 4 months old, the other is 8 years old. I am a godmother to the 8 year old.

I dont want to spend a fortune on outfits for the 4 of us. DH is wearing a suit (he wears one to work anyway), DD9 is wearing a dress and leggings and I havent bought anything for me yet.

I'm struggling with DS. Should I make him wear trousers and a shirt or would I get away with smart jeans, a cardigan with a top underneath and some smart Nike high tops?! I would have to buy the trousers, shirt and a smart pair of shoes as he wears black trainers to school. I dont want to buy a whole outfit that he wont wear again.
Why wouldn't his school trousers and shoes be suitable? then you would only have to buy the shirt and cardie which he would wear again.

Sorry if he has left school and no longer has these, I have assumed as your DD is 9 then your son is 2/3 years older.
