What should my 12 year old son wear to a christening?

My two nephews are being christened together, one is 4 months old, the other is 8 years old. I am a godmother to the 8 year old.
I dont want to spend a fortune on outfits for the 4 of us. DH is wearing a suit (he wears one to work anyway), DD9 is wearing a dress and leggings and I havent bought anything for me yet.
I'm struggling with DS. Should I make him wear trousers and a shirt or would I get away with smart jeans, a cardigan with a top underneath and some smart Nike high tops?! I would have to buy the trousers, shirt and a smart pair of shoes as he wears black trainers to school. I dont want to buy a whole outfit that he wont wear again.

As long as he is clean & shiny and the t-shirt isn't rude or offensive and his cardigan, jeans & trainers are clean & do not have holes, he should be fine.0

No point in buying him smart clothes that he'll only wear once. I'm sure God will understand the financial implications and won't strike you down in vengeance.0

whenever we went to christenings weddings etc cause mum/dad couldnt afford to spalsh out on clothes we wore a shirt trousers and a tie and sometimes our school blazersReplies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. If your reply cannot be nice, has an underlying issue, or you believe that you are God, please post in another forum. Thank you0

Of course he would be clean and tidy with no holes in anything. The outfit I have in mind is fairly new, I dont mind buying him a new shirt or cardigan because I know they will be worn again.
I must admit my sister has told him he wont be wearing jeans (she hasnt said it to me) but I think she is a bit out of date. It would be wrong of us all to wear jeans or be untidy but we are all dressing up and DS will be wearing what he is comfortable in and which is smart for him (usually lives in those baggy tracksuit bottoms when out playing with his friends!). So its more my sister's reaction that I'm worried about. She is rather toxic at the best of times!“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -

So if she sees anything just roll your eyes and shrug ........teenagers..... whilst smiling sweetly and then store the memory away for you to give a wry smirk over in the next 5-13 years. My two nephews are being christened together, one is 4 months old, the other is 8 years old. Does he wear black trousers to school? How about wearing them with his black trainers and just buy a smart short sleeved shirt. You can get them cheap from Tesco/Primark"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye."...Miss piggy0

Spendless, I like it lol, she has it all to come.
Alanalea, good idea. He has an in service day next week and we are going to Primark then for some other bits and pieces so we'll have a look and see what we can come up with. I think smart trousers with trainers looks worse than jeans but at least my sister wont moan lol“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -

I must admit I agree, but if the top half looks 'acceptable' in you sisters eyes she might be too busy to be worrying about his shoes. Trainers also wouldn't be seen in photos"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye."...Miss piggy0 -
When I took my son to a christening he wore jeans, he wasnt the only kid that had them on. My DD's were dressed in summer dresses0

what about skate trousers they sell them in next for around £15 can be worn with a shirt then after with hoodies or tshirts, i also think smart jeans are acceptable but it wouldnt be nice if he was the only one
