I have my travel insurance through World First because of my PEMC (Pulmonary embolism) I'm not stranded but have had e-mail today from World First saying they are covering ash claims. They weren't expensive either so worth a look for anyone with PEMCs
    Clickety click

World first - not the best in the world - one of our clients (medical provider) are taking a patient to court at the moment because of world-first.

How can they "not cover all ash claims, only some" how do you find out which ones they are covering? When we spoke to them they had a blanket no cover due to "act of God", as dictated by their underwriters. This was their stance from last Saturday.

Because Insure and Go are not the underwriters and it depends on the schemes and/or underwriters.

Similar to Tescos, Heinz, Cross & Blackwell, Tesco Value all different but still Backed Beans!

You have to be a bit careful here as in what is meant by paying out. I asked the question of my annual insurer, columbus. Their answer which might apply to many is "yes" but. If you are in the uk ash is cover under travel delay / abandonment due to bad weather. So you get all your holiday costs back but then you might have got them back anyway from the travel agent or airline. If you are abroad then you are also covered for travel delay but the kicker is that this is £20 per 12hours per head up to a max of 100 per head (i.e.2.5 days). Not exactly enough to stay in a hotel is it.. And there is 60 excess too.

So the question is more what insurers are covering ash and which have decent return travel delay rates.

This info is only any good to that particular policy. The whole point is that in your case they may call it bad weathr but othjer IC's are calling it Act of God and therefore denying claims!

WAVE-RIDER = Yes fine, but now fly Air New Zealand, Qantas, American, Delta, Air Canada from outside the EU and that regulation that you quote is not worth zip! Only affective if a) you are in the EU or b) you are on a EU carrier headed towards the EU.

America, Canada, Australia, Thailand, etc etc etc - tough luck you're stuck!

  • I agree with FH Brit. I was stuck in California and we were flying with Air New Zealand so none of the EU related regulations covered us. I had to read through an awful lot of stuff to find out what we were covered by (not much). My travel insurance policy is with Protect Your Bubble which is mentioned on this site on the travel insurance section as a good value product. Unfortunately they have said they are not going to pay out. In future I think I will pay more for insurance and choose one of the insurer who have paid out and also try to fly with EU carriers where possible. I think it should be mentioned on the travel insurance site that the cheapest insurers may not pay out or did not pay out during the volcanic ash crisis so that future buyers can take that into consideration.

view of the AA from the volcano and other claims.

We were away when the volcano went off and had already spoken to the AA about a claim as our son had chicken pox. For the pox they were excellent, called ahead to make sure the clinic took kids and then faxed over the paper work so we didnt have to pay. Good they did as the first place was closed. Got medicne which you would get here and he recovered much quicker.

Then the ash came and we were told, so much for the first 12 hours delay, then another figure for the next 12 hours and so on. Asked the question how long will they pay out and was told until you fly back even if this is a number of days. Really should have read the policy myself but our son still wasnt well and trusted them why would they lie.

Rang twice more to confirm more details and they told us not to worry we were covered, on the second occasion a guy told us there was a max per person and then tried to blame how busy they were for the mistake. But said they would look into each claim when they had the information.

While waiting for our return flight our daughter became ill with chicken pox, called this time they didnt call ahead and told us they would send the documents so we didnt have to pay. Turned up at the hospital to find it was massive and no doc had been sent and they wouldnt answer the phones. So had to pay the consultant fee myself.

Returned home on Saturday and phoned them this morning for claim forms to be told we werent covered for the delay and they wouldnt send a claim form. The AA had now decided that it was an act of nature and they wouldnt pay. Said we were told they would pay on numerous occasions and they backed down, only time will tell if they pay out.

One of the best 'insurances' we've currently got, if you're stranded abroad by a flight cancellation or delayed overnight is EU regulation EC261/2004 - and it comes 'included' with all EU airline tickets. This regulation ensures that the basics of life - food and accomodation - are fully met until the airline can get you a flight back to your destination. No limits, no exclusions. Its existence means I will always choose to fly with an EU airline, whenever feasible - flight delays and cancellations are all too frequent these days.

It isn't that simple when your EU Airline refuses. We will never use Cosmos/Monarch again!

We put in a polite but clear written request for our Right to Care, quoting that exact regulation, at the Lanzarote Cosmos/Monarch office within 48 hours of our flight being cancelled.

The Manager chased us out of his office when we informed him that indeed there was such a regulation and that our families needed accommodation and food/refreshments. He said Monarch was 'nothing to do with them' as they were Cosmos holidays, please leave, and told us to take our 'bits of paper' with us! He refused to give his name when I opened up the slammed office door again and calmly walked back in and put the letters (from us and another family) back on his desk with a suggestion that he may like to please ensure they get to the right person or the Legal Dept.

This was after loads of telephone calls to Cosmos/Monarch in Britain where each and every staff member denied all knowledge of such a regulation and some were horrendously rude because we were that pariah group of customers 'flight only'.

I then emailed the CEO of Monarch Airlines himself and I quoted that very regulation. Never got a reply from him - still haven't even though we are now back.

Meanwhile a family on a Monarch package holiday in our hotel were paid for (after a fight with the same Cosmos office, they said they were rude at first) and were grudgingly given transport to the Airport - although they were kept in the dark about their flight arrangements until the last minute.

Of course we have a receipt for the hotel bill, which includes food, and will be submitting it this weekend.

But don't be too complacent if you fly with Monarch, even though it's an EU Airline. Knowing about and quoting this regulation didn't help us or other families on flight only arrangements out there - it isn't that simple with some Airlines.

We had Airmiles insurance (Europ Assistance) I think they may not pay out either but will be claiming. Can't see any 'Act of God' get-out clause wording on the policy t&c email I was sent.
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
